What caused the Fort Worth pile up accident in Texas?

Police confirmed that the massive crash was due to the treacherous weather conditions.

"The weather conditions are definitely a factor in this massive multi-car accident," police officer Daniel Segura told CNN.

The Dallas-Fort Worth areas saw freezing rain and sleet on the morning of February 11.

About one-10th of an inch of ice accumulated just north of Fort Worth, the National Weather Service said.

Matt Zavadsky, spokesman for MedStar, which provides the ambulance service for the area, said: "The roadway was so treacherous from the ice that several of the first responders were falling on the scene."

The incident happened while the region was under a winter weather advisory due to "unseasonably cold air".

The area is under a winter weather advisory because of ice accumulation, which would result in "very slippery sidewalks, roads and bridges," the weather service said.

"These events are so dangerous because the ice is spotty. We can't stress enough that road conditions could go from good to dangerous within blocks," the NWS Fort Worth office tweeted.

Where did the Fort Worth accident take place?

The crash took place on Interstate 35 near downtown Fort Worth, Texas.

Fort Worth is the fifth-largest city in the state of Texas.

I-35 is a major interstate highway, stretching from Laredo, Texas to Duluth, Minnesota.

How many cars were in the pile up?

At least 130 cars are believed to have been involved in the crash.

Some vehicles were strewn across the freeway, and several huge trucks appeared to be involved.

Footage shows the mangled wreckage of cars and trucks as rescue teams cut trapped people from their vehicles.

The Fort Worth Fire Department confirmed to the The Sun that "multiple patients" were transported to hospital.

Officials are still searching through the cars and trucks to make sure no one is still stuck inside after vehicles were left with "extensive damage".

The crash happened at 6am and officials said some of those involved were health care workers and emergency responders heading to and from work.
