AMANDA Playle was almost driven to suicide by a stalker who turned out to be her own husband.
Paul Playle, 43, tormented his wife of 27 years by pretending to be her childhood sweetheart online. Here's what happened…
What did Paul Playle do?
Paul Playle of Bexhill, East Sussex, set up bogus Facebook and email accounts to bombard her with threats and abuse.
This was made worse by the fact he knew very intimate details about the mum-of-three and even plagued her parents and colleagues.
CCTV from Gatwick airport showed him taking a photo of Amanda, 43, which he then sent from her "stalker".
In "excessive" online exchanges, he told her he had been following her and questioned her about her previous sexual encounters.
How badly was Amanda Playle affected?
Nursery worker Amanda Playle, who met Paul when they were 16, said she considered suicide after the "unbelievable ordeal".
"I am terrified to leave the house, go to work or the shop across the road," she said in a victim impact statement read to the court.
She added: "I panic when my phone goes off. I'm embarrassed and I burst into tears for no reason.
"To think it was the one person I believed I could always trust. I no longer trust anyone any more."
What did the judge say about the case?
It took a jury at Lewes Crown Court just 30 minutes to convict Playle of stalking and coercive and controlling behaviour.
Sentencing him to three-and-a-half years in jail, Judge Christine Henson said that the evidence was overwhelming.
She added: "You watched your wife effectively crumble before you because of the fear she was experiencing from this online abuse.
"You pretended to comfort her. That is the most calculating and cruel behaviour. You're in complete denial of your crime."

Where is Amanda Playle now?
It is unclear where Mrs Playle is now – and no photos of her were released for legal and security purposes – but she said her family was destroyed.
She said: "We had hard times but thought we had a stable family… My children are devastated.
"It was the one person I believed I could always trust."
