What happens when you win the EuroMillions lottery? | The Sun

HAVE you ever imagined yourself winning the EuroMillions and finally quitting your job and living the life of your dreams?

Well, this is what you actually need to do and what happens when you win a lottery like EuroMillions.

What happens when you win the EuroMillions lottery?

Andy Carter spoke to Metro on what really happens when one finds out about the life-changing win.

Andy is a Senior Winner's Advisor at Camelot and has been helping people that become millionaires overnight for more than 13 years.

The first thing to do after you finish celebrating your win is to turn over your ticket and find the phone number which you're supposed to ring.

Andy said: "If you were to win the EuroMillions tomorrow night, you would check the ticket, ring the number on the back of the ticket and that would put you through to a lottery line.

"They would then get a member of the my team to call you back."

From here, the process to claim your prize money begins.

How do lottery winners get contacted?

Once you make the call, expect to receive a phone call back from a person like Andy, who will help you throughout your whole journey.

They will call you as soon as they find out that you are the EuroMillions winner.

During the call, they will plan a visit to meet with you in person, either the next day or whenever you can.

How long do I have to wait to receive the money if I win the lottery?

When they visit your home, they will carry out some checks to verify that you are the true winner.

While making sure that the winning ticket is valid, the team will also make sure that they answer any questions that you might have as a winner.

Andy said: "Within half an hour I can tell if someone has won the money.

"Sometimes we get to people's houses and we don't even open the computer for an hour because we just sit there and answer people's questions.

"This could sometimes last all day."

Once all the checks have been made and the ticket is verified then the winners can receive the money from the Lottery on that very same day.

Once the payment is made, at least two days need to be given for the money to process in the bank account.

Can lottery winners remain anonymous?

Publicity is only a choice, so if you want to remain anonymous, you can.

Andy said: "All winners are anonymous.

"This is the default position for all lottery winners.

"It's entirely the winner's decision if they want to share the news of their win.

"We have an aftercare programme in place to ensure that all winners have access to legal and financial advice.

"Sometimes we go to a winner's home and we've already had media enquiries before we even get there because the winner wants to celebrate their win and mark it publicly.

"Often the rule of thumb tends to be the higher the amount of money the more likely the winner will be to take publicity."
