What injury did John Tavares sustain?

John Tavares, 30, fell to the ice during the first period of the game after he was hit by Ben Chariot.

While he was falling, Corey Perry was diving and struck Tavares in the head with his knee.

Tavares tried standing up but lost his balance and fell backward.

He was taken out of the game with a bloody face and gave a thumbs-up as he was leaving the arena.

What did the Maple Leafs say about John Tavares’ injury?

Maple Leafs coach Sheldon Keefe said Tavares was "conscious and communicating well" but remained in the hospital overnight for further testing, according to ESPN.

According to Keefe, all of Tavares’ testing has “come back clear.”

Keefe said that Tavares’ injury “a big loss for us, but we've got lots of depth.

“Good teams overcome these types of things. That's going to be on us," he said.

How long has John Tavares played with the Maple Leafs?

Tavares has been part of the Maple Leafs since 2018 after he was offered a $77million contract.

He became the third player in Maple Leaf history to record 40 goals in his first season with the team.

Prior to the October 2019 NHL season, Tavares took a leave of absence to spend time with his wife and newborn son.

At the time, he was also named the 25th captain in the history of the Maple Leafs.

That position had not been filled in three and a half years.
