What is the BNP, how is the British National Party linked to Stephen Lawrence and has membership declined?

THE British National Party (BNP) is a far-right political party in Britain.

But is it still as powerful as it was, does it have any councillors, and is it linked to Stephen Lawrence? Here's our lowdown…

What is the BNP?

At its peak it boasted 55 district councillors and netted 943,000 votes in the 2009 European Parliament elections – a staggering six per cent of all votes cast.

It called for all immigration to be stopped, called mosques "symbols of territorial conquest" and believed that only white people should be citizens of the United Kingdom.

Its policies oppose feminism and LGBT rights, and party members have promoted conspiracy theories about white genocide and Jews controlling the world.

The party's membership blossomed under Nick Griffin, but he was expelled from the party in 2014 after a series of internal disputes.

After a series of poor electoral performances it now has only one councillor, who is set to step down by the local elections on May 3rd.

How is it linked to Stephen Lawrence?

BNP leader Nick Griffin sparked outrage in 2006 when he dismissed murdered black teenager Stephen Lawrence as a bully "notorious for taxing the younger kids for their dinner money".

He added that "many people within the Metropolitan Police [believe] he was killed by another black, not a white racist attack at all".

Has membership declined?

The membership of the BNP has tumbled from a peak of over 10,000 in 2009 to just 500 in 2016.

It claims that it has over 3,000 members, but has provided no evidence to back this up.
