Who is David Copeland and where is he now

The 1999 nail bombings rocked the streets of London after a terrorist planted nail bombs set to detonate over three successive weekends.

The attack was orchestrated by David Copeland, a neo-Nazi terrorist- but where is the killer now?

Who is David Copeland?

David Copeland was born on 15 May 1976 in the London Borough of Hounslow to working class parents and two brothers.

As a teenager, Copeland feared that he might be gay after experiencing delusions.

He believed that he was being brainwashed by his parents when they sang along to the Flintstones theme song on television- "we'll have a gay old time".

He began to listen to heavy metal music and was branded "Mr Angry" in school.

When he was twelve years old, the terrorist would have sadistic dreams that he had been reincarnated as an SS officer.

After leaving school, he struggled to find work, blaming immigrants for the difficult job market.

Copeland's parents separated at the age of 19 and he became involved in petty crime, drinking, and drug abuse soon after.

He joined the British National Party (BNP), although he left in 1998 as he felt the group did not do enough to actively curb the "threat" of mass immigration.

The terrorist began to form the desire to trigger a race war in 1998.

What were the 1999 London nail bombings?

The London nail bombings were a series of bombings carried out by Copeland in his attempt to trigger a race war.

He planted three homemade bombs in different parts of London and set them off on 3 consecutive weekends.

The first bombing, on Saturday, 17 April 1999, was in Brixton.

The bomb was detonated on Electric Avenue, a street with a large number of black citizens.

Copeland's bomb was made using explosives from fireworks which were wrapped in 4 inch nails, taped inside a sports bag.

The bomb was moved three times by unsuspecting member of the public before being placed in front of an Iceland supermarket.

Police were called just as the bomb detonated at 5:25 pm, injuring 48 people.

On Saturday, 25 April, the second bomb was set off in Brick Lane, an area of London with a large Bangladeshi population.

The bag was picked up by a member of the public and taken to a police station but detonated in the boot of the car on the way.

13 people were injured in the blast, most of whom were members of the Muslim community, preparing for prayer at their local Mosque.

On Friday, 30 April the final bomb was detonated in SoHo, an area known for being "the heart of the gay community".

As, the bag was being investigated by the owner of a nearby pub, it detonated, killing 3 people, including a pregnant woman, and injuring a total of seventy-nine people.

Four of the survivors had to have limbs amputated.

Where is David Copeland now?

Upon his arrest, the terrorist was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia at Broadmoor hospital.

Copeland attempted to plea that he was guilty of manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility due to his mental state but this was not accepted by the jury.

On the 30th June 2000, Copeland was convicted of three counts of murderand given six life sentences, meaning he would remain in prison for 50 years before he would be eligible for parole.

In October 2015, Copeland was sentenced to a further three years in prison after attacking a fellow inmate with a shiv he fashioned out of a toothbrush and razorblade.
