Why do birds sing in the morning?

NEARLY half of the worlds birds join in on what is known as the dawn chorus.

If you've been woken up by the chirping of birds outside you might not be that thrilled by the morning bird song from March to July each year.

Why do birds sing in the morning?

Morning bird song can be wonderful to hear, starting with a few chirps then filling the air if there is a large bird population.

Early mornings are dark and the air is still, background noise is at a minimum so what better time to sing.

The noise can travel up to 20 times further than during the busy day.

Songbirds sing for a variety of reasons, some to mark their territory and others to find a mate.

The amount of singing fluctuates during the year but peaks during May and June, while birds are searching for a mate.

Much like an orchestra the dawn chorus builds, starting with robins, blackbirds, and thrushes.

Other birds only join in on the song once it is light enough for them to see, such as wrens and blue tits.

Why do birds chirp at night?

As one of the first birds to sing in the morning, the robin is also one of the last to stop singing at night.

The song is first and foremost a signal to others around them, be it at night or in the morning.

One reason is that they have found food or danger and are alerting others.

Birds also sing to try to attract a mate or mark their territory.

Nocturnal birds will sing at night rather than join in on the dawn chorus.

This includes owls, corncrakes, nightjars and nightingales.

All birds are governed by the rhythm of light and dark and their song is part of this habitual behaviour.
