Why everyone is going crazy for the word 'beeking' – and you've probably been doing it this week

BRITS have been eagerly beeking this week – and didn't even know they were doing it.

Everyone has gone wild for the word "beeking", since Countdown's Susie Dent revealed it as her word of the day.

With a nod to the warm weather whilst remaining on message and educating the nation, the wordsmith picked one that reflected the sunshine this week.

She tweeted: "Word of the day has to be 'beek' (1300s): to bask in the sun and give yourself over to the warmth of its rays on your skin."

Her followers responded with glee at the topical term, but also joked it sounded like it could be referring to something ruder.

People said they had been "beeking off work", while one person said she was "reading this while beeking in the park".

Chris Hansford posted: "Well I think we should all just have a jolly good beek together."

One person tweeted: "Try near a window… go beek yourself."

To which another said "I think beeking near a window is illegal in 26 states."

Thousands hit beaches and parks in droves this afternoon as temperatures officially hit 28C – highs normally only seen in summer.

Some of the highest temperatures recorded include at RAF Northolt, with 28.8C inching closer to the UK's maximum April temperature of 29.4C.

Today's glorious sun means that London is the sunshine capital of Europe, with its summer temperatures overtaking those in Italy and Spain.

Met Office meteorologist John West said today was officially the warmest April in nearly 70 years, with the record-breaking temperatures recorded in Northolt, west London, and Kew Gardens.

The sizzling temperatures are coming courtesy of a hot African air plume, which has been sending the weather soaring.
