Prince William and wife Kate Middleton have reportedly dropped a fresh hint that their son Prince George may be about to leave London.

The young royal, who is third in line to the throne behind Prince Charles and his dad William, celebrated his eighth birthday on July 22.

This significant birthday has led to rumours that he may be about to leave London and start boarding school.

George currently attends Thomas's School in Battersea, along with his sister Princess Charlotte, but the prince could follow in his dad's footsteps and move to a boarding school.

William boarded at Ludgrove School in Berkshire from the age of eight, before attending Eton, as did his brother Prince Harry.

And the Cambridges are said to have scouted out a number of schools in the same area, which would also be close to George's grandparents the Middletons and the Queen's residence in Windsor Castle.

"William and Kate have recently visited schools in the Berkshire area, which has got a lot of people talking," a source told New Idea.

The Duke of Cambridge was sent off to board at Ludgrove School in Berkshire after his eighth birthday, as was Prince Harry when he reached the same age.

Prince George's granddad, Prince Charles, attended Cheam School, in Hampshire, following in the footsteps of his own father, Prince Philip, who took up his place at the same boarding school aged eight.

Previous reports had also suggested the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have been looking at potential new homes in the Berkshire area.

It was recently reported by The Daily Mail that they had been enquiring about nearby real estate.

Royal blogger Gertrude Daily previously told the Daily Star that Princess Charlotte will likely miss her brother "when he heads off to boarding school".

She said: "Princess Charlotte will of course miss her big brother, as any child would. But she will be fine when Prince George heads off to boarding school."

Speaking to Vanity Fair, one of the mums at Thomas's School said the young Prince is "really happy" there, where he's "popular and has lots of friends".
