A grey squirrel has been photographed with its head inside a carved pumpkin which had been left out in the garden of a north London home ahead of Halloween.
Gill Merritt captured the pictures after hanging the fruit in her garden.
She was then able to snap the rodent’s antics from her house using a remote control.
A visiting blue tit also got in on the act.
Professional photographer Gill Merritt set up a hollowed up pumpkin with peanut butter smeared on the inside before impaling it on a metal pole in her garden to attract birds
Ms Merritt set up her camera in the garden with a remote control shutter so she could take photographs from inside to avoid startling the animals
Ms Merritt said: ‘The hollowed-out pumpkin is mounted on a steel rod and smeared with peanut butter and crushed nuts inside, which encourages the birds to perform acrobatics as they seek out the goodies’
Ms Merrit prepared the photograph last year but waited 12 months to share the images. She said: ‘I was setting up a pumpkin scene to photograph the many birds that visit.
‘The hollowed-out pumpkin is mounted on a steel rod and smeared with peanut butter and crushed nuts inside, which encourages the birds to perform acrobatics as they seek out the goodies.
‘I had my camera mounted on a tripod and placed out the back door focused on the pumpkin, while I sat on the sofa indoors with a remote controller to operate the camera.
‘I’d only just got settled, when one of the resident squirrels sniffed out the nutty feast and poked its head up inside the pumpkin.
‘I was so shocked I missed the first few shots, but the squirrel was very obliging and gave me several different poses with its whole body hiding the steel rod.
‘Needless to say from that point on, the birds didn’t get a look in.
‘It reminded me of the many poses that the cartoon character Secret Squirrel performed, hence the name.’
Ms Merritt continued: ‘I had my camera mounted on a tripod and placed out the back door focused on the pumpkin, while I sat on the sofa indoors with a remote controller to operate the camera’
Ms Merritt had originally thought she would be able to capture pictures of birds trying to eat the peanut spread
