  •  Sarah Jayne Ellis saw a 4ft long ‘crocodile’ in her neighbour’s garden in Yorkshire
  • She said it didn’t move when she first saw it, but a few hours later it disappeared
  • It is the latest in a number of reported sightings of a beast seen around the area

A woman was left stunned after spotting what she believed was a four-foot long crocodile on the loose in her neighbour’s garden.

Sarah Jayne Ellis spotted the scaly creature, dubbed the ‘Castleford Croc’, lurking in her neighbour’s garden near the River Aire in West Yorkshire.

It is just the latest in a number of reported sightings of a scaly beast seen around the area.

The most recent sighting was captured on camera by Ms Ellis, who said the creature appeared to be around three or four-foot-long and ‘looked real’.

Ms Ellis, who works as a nurse, said it didn’t move when she first saw it, but just a few hours later it had disappeared.

Speaking about the sighting, she said: ‘I was shutting the blinds in the bedroom when I saw it on the grass.

‘I looked a couple of hours later and it was gone.’

She showed the photo of the alleged reptile to her sister-in-law Kate Ellis Holmes, a deputy headteacher from Huddersfield, who said her family were equally as surprised.

Ms Holmes said she thought the picture ‘definitely’ looked like a real crocodile and was left gobsmacked by the unusual sighting.

She continued: ‘I was just genuinely in disbelief when she was telling the story. When I saw the picture I was in disbelief.

‘I thought it was bizarre and a really interesting story.’

It is not the first sighting of an apparent crocodile in Castleford, as wildlife photographer Lee Collings was shocked to stumble across a beast in May last year.

Mr Collings, from Yorkshire, claimed he came across what he believed was a a crocodile or a caiman while on a family walk at the Fairburn Ings nature reserve.

The professional snapper was unable to get a picture of the alleged reptile before it scuttled away after just a few seconds, as he did not have his photography equipment with him.

He said he was ridiculed about his claim with a man dubbing it the ‘Cass-ness monster’.

Mr Collings, who claimed to have seen a reptile in May last year, said he has heard someone had dumped a caiman (pictured: file photo), a smaller reptile from the crocodile species

Mr Collings claimed he has since heard someone had dumped a caiman, a smaller reptile from the crocodile species, which looked more like what he thought he had seen.

At the time, he said: ‘I am 46 years old and have been a birdwatcher for over 30 years, and I’ve never seen anything like this, other than a crocodile or alligator.

‘It walked like it was rigid. It moved slow, but too fast to photograph it by the time I realised what I thought it was.

‘It was 3ft to 4ft in length and about 4ins to 5ins high.’

Ms Ellis said the possible existence of a crocodile in Castleford needs to be investigated after more people said they had seen the beast.

After Mr Collings’ sighting, more people came forward claiming to have seen something at another nearby lake.

One took a video of what they believed was a crocodile submerged in the water at St Aidan’s nature reserve at Swillington near Leeds, only a few miles away.
