Zoo boss ‘killed four zoo animals and served them up at a Christmas party’

The former director of a zoo in the Mexican city of Chilpancingo took four pygmy goats from an enclosure, killed them, and served them up at a Christmas party, it has emerged.

José Rubén Nava had been sacked from his job as director of the local zoo on January 12, following the death of one of the animals.

But after he left, officials found disturbing irregularities in the way the zoo had been run.

According to a statement from the local environment department, one of the zoo’s zebras had been traded for tools, and several other animals were traded off to private individuals, without any official paperwork.

Ownership of exotic animals such as lions and tigers has become very fashionable among Mexico’s cartel bosses, perhaps inspired by Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar and his notorious pet hippos.

The gangsters have been known to mistreat the animals or carelessly allow them to escape, causing mayhem.

But perhaps the most shocking revelation from the Chilpancingo zoo was that Nava had four of the zoo's male pygmy goats killed and cooked for an end-of-year feast.

Fernando Ruiz Gutierrez, the state environment department's director of wildlife, said: "These four animals slaughtered and cooked on the zoo's premises, and were served as food at the year-end party.

"This put the health of the people who ate them at risk because these animals were not fit for human consumption."

Just last week a woman in the central Mexican city of Aguascalientes was attacked in her garden by an escaped lion.

She was rushed to hospital with multiple injuries. Her current condition remains unclear.

The animal, which also attacked two dogs and a cat, was captured on Tuesday (January 31) and sent to a local zoo.
