Ellie Goulding Ditched Her Own Health Advice When She Got Pregnant Unexpectedly

Ellie Goulding revealed exclusively to Vogue that she's expecting her first child with her art dealer husband, Caspar Jopling. She added that the pregnancy, which she discovered right after releasing her latest album, Brightest Blue, was a shock.

At first, it was hard for Goulding to believe she was truly pregnant, adding that it was "not the plan". "The thought of getting pregnant didn't seem like it could be a reality," she says. "You're still eating the same, looking the same, for a while I was probably in denial. I was in such a good streak of fitness," she says. (Her six-pack at the time was impressive.)

But then, "I started having a completely different body and different energy, I couldn't deal with everything!" she says. Goulding, a boxer and runner who has a book about fitness, Fitter. Calmer. Stronger, out this fall, quickly realized though that she could not follow her own health advice.

"I actually went from being smug about how healthy my salads were and my breakfasts and eating nuts and seeds, and then all I wanted was McDonald's," she says. "And I was kind of terrified, I suddenly wanted all of the bad things! Whatever this baby did when it took over my body was like, Hell no—I do not want broccoli, spinach, collards! I just wanted sugar and carbs."

Considering she's already 30 weeks along (yes, she knows the sex; no, she won't be participating in the gender reveal tradition), Goulding has also experienced the many ups and downs that can come with the first two trimesters, besides just pregnancy cravings.

"The sickness and tiredness was nothing I'd ever experienced before. I feel like it's a taboo to talk about pregnancy as being challenging. It's not always serene and like you're not always glowing," she told Vogue. "I'm not saying that every second of this pregnancy has been miserable. It's not always going to be easy. [But,] I have a newfound respect for any woman who has children."
