I Tried the "Perfect Lip Color" Hack Going Viral on TikTok

  • TikTok has introduced a new method to find the perfect lip shade.
  • The hack includes using a brow pencil, blush, and lip gloss in place of traditional lip colors.
  • One editor tested the hack and found her perfect ’90s pink lip color.

As I was passing time on TikTok recently, I noticed that quite a few of the videos on my For You page were all of people experimenting with new lip-color combinations. In each video, users would record as they followed a woman named Mackenzie Burn’s tried-and-true tips to get a lip color that she says will be their personal perfect lip shade. As someone who has an impressive (or irresponsible, depending on who you ask,) amount of lip products that I regularly play around with, I did not expect to hear anything out of the ordinary when I first came across this audio. However, Burn’s tips took me by surprise.

Shout out to all the gworls

In her video, Burn suggests that users switch things up and use an eyebrow pencil as their lip liner, blush as their lip color, and their favorite gloss to finish the look. Though I’ve played around with different formulas of lip colors over the years, I’ve never used an eyebrow pencil to line my lips before, and I certainly never thought to try it in combination with a blush. However, with videos of people trying out the hack consistently leaving me in awe of how good their lips looked, I decided to try it for myself.

I started with the Benefit Cosmetics Precisely My Brow Pencil ($24) in the shade 4.5 as my lip liner. The tip of the pencil was extremely fine, so it took a little while longer to get as thick of a line as I was used to, but I did like how it looked once fully applied.

Then, I applied the pink shade in the Danessa Myricks “Dew It Undercover” Lip and Cheek Palette ($32) to the middle of my lips. The combination created a slightly ashy pink shade that left me a little nervous.

However, once I added the gloss, which was my favorite Ami Colé Lip Treatment Oil ($20), I was sold. The combination of the three shades gave me a gorgeous ’90s cool-toned pink lip that I have absolutely been loving lately and have been trying to emulate after seeing celebrities like SZA make it a part of their signature looks.

In all, this is a very solid hack and it utilizes products that most of us already own. I will say that the lip combinations I’ve seen do seem to lean a bit more toward the dark and vampy shades that were popular in the ’90s (which would make sense, seeing as how Gen Z is all about bringing ’90s beauty back to the forefront), so if you your prefer a more pink tone or “true” neutral nude, this hack probably wouldn’t work for you. I, however, will be happily wearing my newly discovered SZA-esque nude until further notice, and will also be making a trip to Sephora to stock up on more brow pencils. I’ll be going through them much quicker now.
