Fake tan has a reputation for being smelly, patchy, and making people look vaguely dirty when they have it on rather than giving them a bronzed glow.
That’s why, when you find a tan that isn’t orange (or sits on your skin like oil on water) it’s a real moment.
The frequency of my own self tanning is usually ‘whenever I’m going out out‘ which, since the pandemic, has been cut down to ‘never’.
Especially given the blotchy way tan sometimes sits on my dry skin and sometimes looks slightly muddy due to my naturally pink hue, it seemed like a huge faff.
However, when St Moriz got in touch to ask if I’d like to try their new colour correcting formula, I decided to give it a go in the hope it might become that holy grail product once we’re all set free.
Here’s how I found it.
What is St Moriz colour-correcting tanning foam?
Makeup obsessives will know all about colour correcting their face, using the colour wheel to negate dull spots, red tones, and hyperpigmentation.
This product is the same effect, but for your body, with four different undertones in the foam that promise a natural looking glow that works for your skin tone.
St Moriz say: ‘The undertones include peach, olive, purple and honey so you can achieve the perfect tan, while avoiding orange tones for a natural finish.
‘The colour correcting hues counteract opposite tones; peach brightens the skin, olive cancels redness, purple targets yellow tones and honey adds warmth to the skin.’
I tried the medium shade with the greeny olive tone, as I can tan naturally, but have a pink tone to my skin.
Faff involved
This is pretty much a two-in-one product, as it works as an instant tan but develops for eight hours so the colour stays on after you have a shower.
It’s fairly similar to any other tanner you’ve used in a foam format, going on with a standard mitt. I put it on in the evening, then had a shower in the morning to remove any residue.
The results
I was so shocked by the results of this tan, given I’ve had poor results from some expensive brands in the past.
The green tone scared me a little, as dark tan with a green tone can be muddy on pale skin, but this was definitely more of an olivey-brown than Kermit the frog green.
Because it’s also instant, you can see the colour as it goes on and buff out any streaks. Plus, if I was going out, I could just put it on right before I go rather than having to go through the rigmarole the night before.
On pale people like me, fake tan sometimes looks too fake, but this made me look like I’d just been on holiday somewhere warm (I can but dream).
Some of the colour washed off after the first shower, but it hasn’t faded much in the five or so days since I applied, which is a definite win.
Is it worth the faff?
In short, yes. I’ve recommended this to my friends already because I’m so impressed by it, and will buy it again once I run out – both very good signs.
If you’ve always thought that tanning isn’t for you, this might be the one to try first because of its natural sheen that tailors to your specific concern.
I might just be sat in the house looking bronzed, but it’s good to know I have a go-to once social events come back and it’s warm enough to get my legs out.
