Watch Sean Garrette’s Expert Nighttime Skin Care Routine

The effortlessly immaculate, shiny, dewy, and silky-smooth skin of aesthetician and Black skin care content creator Sean Garrette proves the extent of his expertise.

When it comes to tackling his skin, Garrette focuses his routine on two main factors: texture and hyperpigmentation. He specifically mentions post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, which he explains is a fairly common condition specifically caused by topical trauma, whether from picking at breakouts or using products with ingredients that are too astringent or stripping for one’s skin type. The skin care guru is particular about the products he chooses for his face, ensuring that the ingredients are not only suitable for his skin type, but are also of high quality. With his expert knowledge, he fleshes out specific ingredients in the products he chooses that target the areas of interest. And, here, on this episode of Go to Bed with Me, he’s sharing some of them with us.

“When I look for my serums and my treatments, I really try to make sure that they’re of good quality, because those are the things that matter the most to me,” Garrette says. “My serums are super important, so I want to make sure that they’re potent [and] they have an incredible formula.”

Garrette maintains that, along with sunscreen, his most important step throughout the process is cleansing. Preferring gentle cleansers, Garrette specifically opts for the Alpha Beta Cleansing Gel by Dr. Dennis Gross. “It’s super gentle, keeps my pores clear, keeps my complexion bright, and it’s a really good one,” he says. Next, he reaches for a product that makes multiple appearances throughout his routine: the Botanic Rose Toner by newly launched Black skincare brand Traqaris. He intermittently sprays the toner between each step to keep his skin moist, explaining that dampening the skin allows for more effective penetration of subsequent products.

Jump-starting his hyperpigmentation treatment, he then goes in with SkinMedica’s Pigment Correcting Serum, which he says has led to dramatic differences in his skin tone within just the first two weeks of usage. The product’s efficacy is in large part due to its array of hyperpigmentation-targeting ingredients, many of which Garrette mentions. “[When] you’re looking for a hyperpigmentation treatment, you want to look for things like tranexamic acid, alpha arbutin, azelaic acid, niacinamide, [and] vitamin C if it’s kind of superficial hyperpigmentation,” he shares. “Those ingredients really help target the overproduction of melanocytes, which are the skin cells that cause the overproduction of the melanin.” He then grabs the Azelaic Acid Booster by Paula’s Choice, adding, “Anyone who follows me on social media knows that I’m obsessed with this product.”

He then goes into the nourishment part of his routine—and as a newly self-proclaimed “eye cream fanatic,” he first applies Sunday Riley’s Brightening and Depuffing Eye Cream. “I was always someone who felt like eye cream just wasn’t necessary—and I do feel like a lot of people still can just use their traditional moisturizer and kind of dab it under the eye and bring your hydrating serums to the orbital bone—but now that I’m kind of moving into my 30s, which is, like, terrifying … I need all the eye cream,” he says.

Finally, to seal everything in, he uses the Versed Recovery Mode Advanced Night Cream, which he finds perfectly suitable for his combined skin type that leans toward dehydration, given that it is a rich cream that is also lightweight. “It just makes your skin so juicy and healthy and beautiful and radiant,” Garrette adds.
