When You Wear Blush Every Day, This Is What Happens To Your Skin

To some women, makeup can be an armor that makes them feel empowered and beautiful. For others, cosmetics are a kind of tool that they can use to express their creativity. Think of makeup artists and the beauty community on YouTube — they have flourished and have become successful in their respective careers.

When thinking of blushes, beauty lovers usually think of soft pink or coral to bright magenta hues, making a massive difference in the overall makeup look. The added flush to the cheeks can make a face look likely and awake. “I add a sweep of blush because it’s a super-quick way to make your face look fresh and more alive,” renowned makeup artist Lisa Eldridge told Makeup in an interview.

Throughout the years since the creation of cosmetics, blushes have evolved. There are several types for every makeup enthusiast, from power to cream blush. Even lip tints can be used for the cheeks to add that natural-looking flush. “I feel like we spend our lives looking for blusher and lipstick that matches, and if you have a lipstick that you love, why not use it on your cheeks as well? That’s how cream blush is created,” Amy Conway, a makeup artist from Bobbi Brown, said (via Beauty Crew). While blushes are fun and cute, wearing them every day can have adverse effects on the skin.

Can wearing blush every day cause adverse effects on the skin?

Like all forms of makeup, daily application of blush can cause various side effects on the skin. Some cosmetics have harmful chemicals that are dangerous to the epidermis, and wearing such products can damage the skin’s outer layer that protects it from such substances. When broken, bacteria can quickly enter the skin, which then causes breakouts and other skin problems (via SkinKraft).

Wearing makeup for long periods can cause clogged pores. As to how long one can wear makeup, it depends on their skin type. Technically, anyone can wear makeup for the whole day. If you have sensitive skin, you can choose cosmetic products formulated for your skin type, and then it can be safe to wear makeup throughout the day. Of course, at the end of the day or before heading to bed, always clean your face (via Lybrate).

Ariel Enriquez, a Skin Trainer at Massage Retreat & Spa in Minneapolis, discussed the use of makeup on a regular basis with Verily. “It isn’t bad to wear makeup every day, but that all depends on the ingredients in the products, as well as how diligent you are in removing the makeup,” they said.

Wearing blush with a mask is not ideal

Since the novel coronavirus has shaken the world, people have been wearing masks every time they enter establishments, such as stores, restaurants, offices, hospitals, and the airport, to protect themselves and others. And for women who love wearing makeup, the mask can pose a lot of difficulties. The transfer of cosmetics especially blushes, onto the protective equipment can be unsanitary. The use of protective masks even developed a skin condition that is called maskne (mask acne).

The cheeks down to the chin are more prone to breakouts because of the mask (via Elle). The edges of the mask sit on these areas and sometimes for long periods. The mask can trap air inside the lower part of your face and cause humidity from breathing and sweat — leading to clogged pores and acne. The friction of the mask against your skin also causes irritation. The mask moves whenever you speak or move your mouth (via Healthline). Blush usually transfers first to the surgical face mask as it is on the cheeks, mixed with sweat, dead skin cells, and anything from the environment. Gross, right? The bacteria can transfer to the skin when reusing masks. Experts recommend changing masks every day and maybe use light makeup so that your skin can breathe better underneath the protective equipment.
