Your Hair and Makeup Is Going to Be Sparkly in 2022

The second coming of frosted eyeshadow, chunky highlights, and snap clips have made 2021 look (and feel) like 2002. And guess what? Nothing's gonna change in 2022 — particularly the decade's obsession with bedazzling everything, from Motorola flip phones to tank tops.

There's no better canvas for rhinestones than your hair and face, and that's exactly what celebrities have been bedazzling on red carpets like the 2021 VMAs and Met Gala. Hints of sparkle have also popped up on Spring/Summer 2022 runways, including Simone Rocha and Luar, further confirming that hair and face jewelry will be trending next year.

Ahead, we've compiled a few ideas on how to make your makeup and hair looks sparkle, whether you have in-person plans or feel like being glamorous while you continue to WFH on your couch.

Alicia Keys

You could say Keys’s slick chignon shines as bright as the New York City lights, thanks to the crystals adorning her style. The singer’s hairstylist Nai’vsha turned to TRESemmé’s  Flawless Curls Defining Gel to the perimeter of her head for a sleek finish. 

Saweetie

The limit does not exist when it comes to the number of ways to style a bob. Here, Saweetie’s hairstylist Jason gave the popular cut the Y2K treatment by bedazzling her hair from roots to ends, complete with a hair flip.  

Kacey Musgraves

In the early aughts, everything from flip phones to jeans were bedazzled, and since Y2K trends are making a comeback, why not add some crystals to your hair, too? Hairstylist Giovanni Delgado placed crystals all throughout Musgraves’s long mermaid waves, while makeup artist Moani Lee went with a shimmery purple smoky eye and silver body highlighter for even more sparkle.

Channeling the statue of liberty, poet laureate and Estée Lauder Global Changemaker, Amanda Gorman, wore stones of various sizes across her face at the 2021 Met Gala. Her makeup artist Joanna Simkin thought of the stars on the American flag, and placed the crystals to mimic the shape of one blowing in the wind. 

Dua Lipa

While Lipa wore this crystal-lined eye makeup look by Samantha Lau for a performance in Las Vegas, it’s too good to stay there. 

Storm Reid

Pearls aren’t just for necklaces and earrings. The gemstones make an elegant alternative to eyeliner. For the 2021 Met Gala, makeup artist Pauly Blanch placed individual pearls in a halo shape around Reid’s eyelids and brow bone to create a negative space eyeliner look. A few coats of Maybelline’s upcoming Colossal Curl Bounce Mascara really made the actress’ eyes pop. 

Luar Spring/Summer 2022

As seen on the Luar SS22 runway,  adding a few crystals to colorful eyeshadow or a classic cat eye is a baby step into the trend.
