This Morning viewers were taken by surprise as Andrew Neil welled up with tears during his appearance on the daytime ITV show on Wednesday.

The 72 year old Scottish journalist was wrapping up a discussion on Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's decision to name their daughter Lilibet when he randomly thanked hosts Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby for their hospitality.

With his voice shaking as he struggled to hold back tears, Andrew told the pair: "Listen, I wanted to come in today to say thank you."

Andrew's gratitude took Phillip by surprise as the presenter asked him to clarify what he saying thank you for.

"Thank you for being so kind," he replied as he continued to choke up on the sofa.

The hosts welcomed his sweet sentiment, with Phillip saying: "Andrew! That's a lovely thing to say."

Holly added: "That is very kind of you," before placing her hand on her chest and saying: "Oh, you are soft sometimes."

Andrew is the chairman of GB News, a brand new channel set to launch on Sunday 13 June. His sudden emotional moment suggests once the channel is up and running, he may no longer appear on This Morning to discuss news headlines.

The surprising, tearful moment sparked plenty of discussion from viewers, with one tweeting: "That was truly heartfelt from Andrew, I think it even took him by surprise #andrewneil #ThisMorning."

Another said: "Andrew Neil greeting on This Morning. What the hell happened there."

A third wrote: "Not sure if I'm tripping but Andrew Neil has just started crying on This Morning with Phil and Holly…"

"Andrew Neil getting all emosh. Quivering bottom lip and everything #ThisMorning," added another viewer, before a final Twitter user said: "Have I missed something? Why was Andrew Neil crying? #ThisMorning."

Andrew's emotional moment comes after he claimed Piers Morgan would be a "huge asset" for GB News.

Since his dramatic Good Morning Britain exit in March, journalist and presenter Piers has been rumoured to be in the running for a hosting role on the channel. However, he is yet to officially announce a position.
