Armageddon and Gone Girl actor Ben Affleck, 48, revealed how ending his nine year marriage to the mother of his three children, Violet, 15, Seraphina, 12, and eight-year-old Samuel has helped shape his performances on stage for the better. The award-winning star cited the “ups and downs” in his life as giving him “sufficient life experience to bring to a role”, which has helped him to become a more “interesting” actor.
I’m at a point now in my life where I have sufficient life experience

Speaking about portraying his role of a grieving alcoholic in Gavin O’Connor’s The Way Back, the star opened up on how certain events in his life have improved his acting abilities by giving him experiences to draw on.
Talking about how he related to the role, Ben said: “But for me, the movie was much more about the fact that — whether it’s having lived enough years, having seen enough ups and downs, having had children and divorce — I’m at a point now in my life where I have sufficient life experience to bring to a role to make it really interesting for me.”
“It’s really about grief and losing a child, which, thank God, I have not experienced, and is probably the worst thing you can experience.”
The Batman star also spoke about the effect that alcohol has had on life in relation to playing Jack Cunningham.
He said frankly: “I’m a recovering alcoholic and I played an alcoholic in the movie.”
The actor explained that these experiences helped him in his latest role.
He said: “I’m not good enough to just invent it from whole cloth, you know? I didn’t have to do research for the alcoholism aspect of the movie — that was covered.
“Growing older and having had more intense personal experiences has made acting much more interesting, and made me drawn to the kinds of movies about people who are flawed.”
Jennifer Garner’s former husband also touched on how his battle with alcoholism has influenced his life.
He said: “Alcoholism, in and of itself, and compulsive behaviour, are not inherently super interesting, but what is sometimes interesting is what you discover about yourself in the course of recovery and trying to figure out what went wrong, how to fix it, how you want your life to look and what kind of ethics you want to live by.”
The Good Will Hunting actor made the confession while in conversation with Gary Oldman, John David Washington, Delroy Lindo, Sacha Baron Cohen, and Steven Yeun for The Hollywood Reporter’s Actor Roundtable.
Speaking about his future plans, the actor added: “I have three children I want to spend time with, I have a life that I really enjoy, and I want to really love my work and tell these kinds of stories, with characters that are as rich as the ones that you all portrayed.”

Hollywood’s former golden couple first met on the set of Pearl Harbour in 2000.
It wasn’t until 2004 that they became romantically involved, as before this Jennifer was married to actor Scott Foley, while Ben Affleck was with Jennifer Lopez until they called off their engagement.
In 2005 it was announced that the couple were engaged and in June that year they married in a private ceremony.
Later that year Ben and Jennifer’s first daughter Violet was born, followed by Seraphone in 2009 and son Samuel in 2012.
In June 2015 the couple announced that they were getting a divorce, releasing a statement that outlined their intentions to co-parent their children together.
In a Vanity Fair interview Jennifer called her ex-husband the “love of her life” but added that he was a “complicated guy.”
After the A-list couple’s divorce was finalised in 2018, the actor said in an interview with The New York Times two years later that his split from his former wife was his “biggest regret”.
Since the split, the actor has been romantically linked to Saturday Night Live producer Lindsay Shookus, as well as actress Ana de Armas.
