Singing legend Dolly Parton is putting her name on items outside of the music world. Already the owner of the successful theme park Dollywood, Parton is launching her own beauty brand this spring, and just announced her foray into sweet treats. The country icon recently released her own ice cream flavor that is now available in limited supply.
Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams teams up with Dolly Parton
Announcing a partnership with Parton, Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams shared the news of their collaboration with the music star. The company praised Parton for her charitable works and wanted to join forces with her in the Grammy winner’s altruistic missions.
“WE MADE AN ICE CREAM WITH DOLLY,” the company’s website posted on Instagram on March 25, alongside a photo of Parton holding up a pint of the dairy dessert. “@dollyparton is the person we all want to be when we grow up. An unstoppable force for good with the power to bring people together—aka a walking, amplified embodiment of what we hope to be as a company.”
Revealing the feisty flavor that reflects Parton’s personality, Jeni’s is donating proceeds towards one of the singer’s pet projects.
“Strawberry Pretzel Pie is our ode to the Queen of Country: sweet and salty, with timeless appeal, deep American roots, and makes you feel good,” the post read. “Benefitting Dolly’s @imaginationlibrary, a book gifting program that gives free books to children from birth to age five.”
Dolly Parton crashed Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams website
When the news broke that Parton’s ice cream flavor released on April 8, fans screamed for ice cream – literally. The demand for the strawberry treat overwhelmed Jeni’s website, causing it to crash. At one point in the day, the company tweeted, “Did y’all just break our website?”
After several attempts to get the site up and running, Jeni’s posted an apology to customers for the delay in getting their Dolly dessert.
“Thank you for TRYING to buy our Dolly pints today,” Jeni’s wrote on Instagram. “We realize this release was disappointing and we’re so sorry it’s been a frustrating experience. … We knew you were excited about our flavor with Dolly Parton and we had anticipated the Strawberry Pretzel Pie pints selling out fast.”
Apparently, the amount of traffic the company’s site experienced for the country singer’s flavor was unprecedented.
“Our site had 50 times more users than it sees on average,” Jeni’s explained. “We had planned and tested for this level of traffic and expected our site to be able to handle it. … All of our resources were focused on getting this fixed and we wish we would have gotten an update out to you sooner. We appreciate you supporting us.”
‘As smile-inducing as Dolly Parton herself’
Jeni’s gave a mouthwatering description of the new flavor, along with a hint of the delight consumers can expect.
“Strawberry Pretzel Pie is a throwback to the triple-decker classic of the potlucks of our youths,” Jeni’s posted. “Layers of salty pretzel gravel, subtly sweet and effortlessly sweet-tart cream cheese ice cream, and lipstick red strawberry sauce. As smile inducing as @dollyparton herself.”
Parton’s Imagination Library is a project close to her heart. Launching the book-gifting program in 1995, the library provides free books to children from birth to five years old. Inspired by her father to create the program, Parton chose her home town of Sevier County, TN to distribute the Imagination Library’s very first books.
“We created it for the kids in my hometown to inspire a love of reading and a love for books by giving them a new book each month until they are 5 years old,” Parton told PaperMag in 2015. “It’s amazing what books mean to people at certain times in their lives. I want books to be in every household in the world so every child has an opportunity to love reading and to love learning.”
