Their return was confirmed during an advert break on Wednesday 10 February's segment, where a trailer showed the couple hosting the show with a voiceover declaring the news.

A source told The Sun: “Ruth and Eamonn are obviously upset and feel humiliated about being put out to pasture.

“But they've been advised to keep schtum or risk losing more work. It could damage their brand if they lash out.”

During their final show, Eamonn pleaded with viewers to be nice to his replacement Alison when she takes over their weekly slot.

He said: ”You won't be watching us anymore on a Friday, Alison Hammond and Dermot O'Leary are going to be here on Fridays from here on in.
