Hocus Pocus 2 release date revealed as Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy and Sarah Jessica Parker return

The Sanderson sisters are finally back with fans getting an idea of what the return of the evil siblings of Salem will look like as well as confirmation on that all important release date.

It turns out the film will be making its debut just before Halloween, meaning there's still a while to go before fans will see the entire plot but at least they've had a tease of what is to come.

It will be available on Disney+ from September 30.

Disney shared the exciting news about the sequel during the studio's upfronts presentation on Tuesday (May 18) and with some revelations about the plot, it looks like it may be even better than fans were expecting.

With Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy all reprising their original roles, there's been a sneak peek into the return of the leading ladies, with the evil sisters set to spring straight into action.

In some brief raw footage, two young girls are seen lighting the Black Flame Candle which summons the witches and sees Midler arriving with a scream of "Lock up your children! Yes, Salem, we're back!"

The sisters burst straight into song, covering Elton John's "The B***h Is Back".

Characters returning from the 1993 classic include Billy Butcherson, reprised by Doug James and the mayor of Salem, played by Tony Hale, also makes an appearance.

Disney has confirmed we’ll see three young women accidentally bring the Sanderson sisters back to modern-day Salem. It’s then up to them to figure out how to stop the child-hungry witches from wreaking a new kind of havoc on the world.

Winifred, Sarah and Mary will be as evil as ever and when the news was first announced, Midler posted a picture of the Hocus Pocus 2 lettering with a caption saying: “Sistaaaahs! It's been 300 years… But we’re BACK! #HocusPocus2 arrives Fall 2022 on @Disney Plus.”

Parker did the same and wrote: “Yep. I’m ready. To Run. Amok, amok, amok, amok.” While Najimy’s caption read: “The people have spoken: I smell children…again.”

Disney also revealed that the sequel has had a shakeup in terms of the director role.

Anne Fletcher – best known for her film director credits in Step Up, 27 Dresses and The Proposal – will be directing Hocus Pocus 2, taking over for Adam Shankman who will still serve as an executive producer. This reason for the swap is because Shankman is currently filming Disney’s other sequel, Disenchanted.

Film director Shankman took to Instagram to say: “Yep!!! It’s true! They’re allllll back and the sistahhhhs are gonna be running amok amok amok!!! My heart is broken that my directing duties on #Disenchanted are prohibiting me from directing in #hocuspocus2 but I’m handing over the reins to the amazing #AnneFletcher.”

Confirming the news, Fletcher added: "Now more than ever, people need to laugh. We should be laughing every day, and there is so much fun to be had with these three unbelievable women playing delicious characters from such a beloved film.

"I am so grateful to be able to play a part in bringing these witches back to life, and to be working with my friends at Disney again makes it all the more special. This is a movie for everyone, from the fans who grew up with the first film to the next generation of viewers, and I can't wait to get started.”
