Inside Prince Charles’ unusual food habit where ‘lunch is a luxury’

As the heir to the throne,Prince Charles ’ diary is jam-packed with engagements and royal tours, especially in recent months wherehe has stepped up to help his mother Her Majesty, the Queen.

And with his work taking him all around the globe, perhaps it’s no surprise that Prince Charles, 72, has developed an unusual eating habit that has left those around him feeling “hungry”.

According to former royal correspondent Gordon Rayner, the Prince of Wales prefers to eat a late breakfast when completing royal engagements, something that has caused the royal to view lunch as being a “luxury”.

Writing for theDaily Telegraph, the royal expert claimed that Prince Charles’ busy schedule often means he goes hungry while on royal tours and results in him depending on snacks throughout the day.

“Lunch is seen as a luxury that gets in the way of his work, so he eats a late breakfast and works through,” he explained.

“I found this out the hard way, by going hungry when I started covering royal tours and watching enviously as his long-suffering staff produced snacks from pockets so they could eat on the go.”

Although his royal duties may determine his eating habits, that isn’t to say that Prince Charles isn’t a foodie.

If reports are to be believed, the future monarch is a fan of pizza and although his favourite takeaway has never been revealed,he did give fans an idea of his favourite pizza topping back in 2019 while he visited St.Boswell’s.

While on the visit, he was given a margherita pizza from Hunters Stables restaurant’s chef Erminio Di Meo.

Speaking to Press Association at the time, Erminio said: “He was curious, he smiled and I said, 'It's a margarita. I believe the prince said, 'It's my favourite.”

And while Prince Charles may find himself sometimes skipping lunch, he’s not the only royal with surprising food habits.

For many people, enjoying afternoon tea may be something that happens on big occasions but forthe Queen, tucking into the British staple of afternoon tea is something she allegedly does every single day.

If that wasn’t enough, it’s rumoured that point-edged food is not allowed at the Queen's table, as part of a tradition started by her royal ancestors.

According to the monarch's former royal chef Graham Newbould, the Queen never eats sandwiches shaped with points and instead opts for small 'jam penny' sandwiches at afternoon tea.

“The royals never have square sandwiches because tradition has it that anyone presenting them with pointed-edged food is trying to overthrow the throne of England,” he said on the C5 documentary Secrets of the Royal Kitchen.
