Adele has hit back at controversy surrounding her weight loss journey, explaining that she could not “add another worry” on top of her responsibilities. The Someone Like You singer opened up about her weight during an interview with Oprah Winfrey.

Adele said her astonishing weight loss could be attributed to working out up to three times a day.

The star explained to the American TV host that she had begun exercising more frequently in a bid to control her anxiety after her divorce.

She said in the CBS Special, which aired in the US last night: “I had the most terrifying anxiety attacks after I left my marriage.

“They paralysed me completely, and made me so confused because I wouldn’t be able to have any control over my body.”

But then Adele realised that working out helped ease her worries, so she started doing it more often.

She continued: “It really contributed towards me getting my mind right.”

Oprah then shared how her own weight loss had affected her fans in the past.

She explained that some people felt “upset” and “abandoned” when she announced her plans to shed some weight.

In response, Adele admitted she was not surprised after receiving similar criticism, as she was used to being “objectified”.

The singer said: “I’m not shocked or even fazed by it.

“Because my body has been objectified my entire career.

“I’m either too big or too small; I’m either hot or I’m not.

“But it’s not my job to validate how people feel about their bodies.

“I feel bad that it’s made anyone feel horrible about themselves – but that’s not my job.

“I’m trying to sort my own life out. I can’t add another worry,” the star concluded.

During the candid conversation, Adele told Oprah she remains close to her ex-husband Simon Konecki.

The two share a nine-year-old son together.

Adele explained:  “I respect him more than anyone… We don’t talk about (the new album)…

“But he knows what kind of artist I am, that I have to dig deep to tell my stories.”

One Night Only aired on CBS on Sunday (14 November). A UK air date is yet to be announced.
