Simon Cowell takes to the stage at the Royal Variety Performance 2022… hours after sparking fan concern as he looked ‘unrecognisable’ in promo clip

Simon Cowell took to the stage at the Royal Variety Performance 2022 at London’s Royal Albert Hall on Thursday evening, after sparking fan concern earlier in the day.

The Britain’s Got Talent judge, 63, appeared on stage to speak to the star-studded audience, including the likes of Ellie Goulding, Rita Wilson and Becky Hill.

His public appearance came just hours after he sparked worry with his fans in a video shared to social media, where he looked ‘unrecognisable’.

Taking to the stage at the Royal Variety Performance, Simon once again looked strikingly different with a smooth complexion and bright white teeth.

The music mogul cut a dapper figure in black trousers and a suave blazer with glossy lapels, which he styled with a black jumper.

He sported a well-groomed beard and styled his dark locks in a spiked gelled style for the lavish event, which is set to air on ITV1 and ITVX on December 20 – and will be the first since the Queen died in September.

This year, the Earl and Countess of Wessex are set to represent the Royal Family. In previous years it has been attended by the late Queen Elizabeth II and the now King Charles.

Simon’s appearance at the performance comes after fans expressed their concern over a promotional video shared to social media earlier on Thursday.

He looked ‘unrecognisable’ as he sported an incredibly smooth complexion and enhanced features, which could have been a result of cosmetic work.

During the video, Simon encouraged people to get in touch in order to audition for Britain’s Got Talent, just days after judge David Walliams quit the show.

He said in the short VT: ‘I always say on this show, two or three minutes can change your life. And it has. And maybe this time it’s gonna be you.

‘So please audition now for next year’s season and I look forward to meeting you.’

However, fans were quick to take to the comments, writing things like: ‘What has happened to his face?’

‘Holy moly, I nearly didn’t recognise him then,’ another added, while a third penned: ‘Somebody has forgot to turn the Snapchat filters off.’

A fourth wrote: ‘What has happened to this poor chap’s face. And hair?’

Yet others were loving his new video and wrote: ‘Simon Cowell gets younger and younger each year,’ while another person added: ‘Looking well!’

Simon lost 20lbs over the last two years as he overhauled his lifestyle, keeping to a regular sleep and exercise schedule, after breaking his back in 2020 when he crashed his electric bike near his Malibu home.

He suffered complications from surgery to fuse his vertebrae, which required him to mostly stay in bed for six months.

Simon now walks 40 miles a week and rearranged his work schedule to ensure he only starts business meetings after 9am, rather than hold conferences into the early hours of the morning like he used to.

A source previously told MailOnline: ‘Simon said how he hasn’t worn trainers as much as this in 20 years. He feels fitter than ever before and is keeping to a normal routine rather than being on the phone into the early hours of the morning.’
