“A Quiet Place Part II” is drumming up solid pre-sales, according to online ticketing service Fandango. If momentum sustains, that could bode well for the film’s box office debut over Memorial Day weekend.
The follow-up to Paramount’s 2018 sleeper hit “A Quiet Place” is currently selling twice as many advance tickets on Fandango compared to the same point in its 2020 sales cycle. The film was originally scheduled for March 20, 2020, but it was pulled from release shortly before its planned big-screen launch as COVID-19 began to threaten normal life in the U.S.
Fandango didn’t provide specifics, but says advanced sales for “A Quiet Place Part II” have been tracking ahead of the original film, which debuted to $50 million in 2018. Although it’s not a perfect comparison because “A Quiet Place” wasn’t a known property prior to its release.
Still, analysts believe “A Quiet Place 2” has the potential to generate between $40 million and $50 million in its first three days in theaters. Granted that revenues reach that range, it would surpass the Warner Bros. tentpole “Godzilla vs. Kong” ($32 million) as the biggest opening since the pandemic hit.
“A Quiet Place Part II” won’t be the lone newcomer on movie theater marquees. On the same weekend, Disney’s “Cruella,” an origin story of the “101 Dalmatians” villain starring Emma Stone, is premiering in theaters and on Disney Plus for a premium fee. Despite its hybrid release, box office experts predict “Cruella” could pull in $30 million to $40 million in its first weekend. Fandango did not provide pre-sale information for “Cruella.”
“A Quiet Place Part II,” another mostly silent thriller starring Emily Blunt and her husband, director John Krasinski, should benefit from positive reviews. Variety’s chief film critic Peter Debruge says the sequel “amps up the scares” and notes the film may resonate even more after people have spent nearly a year in isolation. It’s averaging a 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
“Strong presales for ‘A Quiet Place Part II’ on Fandango may present another indicator of a possible domestic box office recovery, especially as we head into Memorial Day weekend, the official kickoff to summer movie season,” says Fandango chief commercial officer Kevin Shepela. “Even though some theaters are still operating at reduced capacity, it’s encouraging to see the Fandango pre-sales momentum.”
As Shepela indicates, the box office could use the boost. Theater owners, struggling to emerge from the pandemic, are banking on several potential blockbusters, including Marvel’s “Black Widow,” the Warner Bros. musical “In the Heights” and Universal’s “F9,” to shake off a pandemic torpor. Already, there’s growing optimism since “F9” looks primed for a huge start at the international box office.
“This is the kind of experience theaters were made for,” said Fandango managing editor Erik Davis. “Audiences who have long been waiting for the big-screen debut of ‘A Quiet Place Part II’ will not be disappointed.”
