Move over Colin vs Cuthbert, Aldi is returning its attention to fragrance dupes rather than party cakes. The budget supermarket is set to launch £5.99 alternatives to some very pricey designer fragrances, saving shoppers up to £102 a bottle.
With Mother’s Day approaching, Aldi is also eyeing up the home spa market, with a pampering gift set in a similar style to a gorgeous Rituals favourite. The supermarket version will cost £8.99 compared to £20.90 for the premium Ritual of Sakura version. It’s all under Aldi’s Lacura beauty brand, which has previously launched cut-price rivals to posh names like Jo Malone, Glow Recipe and Laura Mercier.
Aldi’s first fragrance inspiration this time is YSL’s Black Opium and its famously addictive black coffee note, which costs £108 for a 90ml bottle. The supermarket’s alternative, Lacura Dark Blossom, is packaged in a similar-ish dark bottle, and shares notes of orange blossom and – yes – “coffee aromas”.
According to Aldi: “This elegant parfum oozes confidence and sophistication.”
The supermarket is also out to tempt fans of Carolina Herrera’s mega-selling Good Girl perfume, RRP £98 for 80ml. You won’t find Lacura’s £5.99 alternative, Lady Pour Femme, dressed up in a sassy stiletto bottle but it does contain notes of sandalwood and tonka bean also found in the designer original.
The budget scent trio is completed by Lacura Atom, £5.99, which is inspired by cult favourite Molecule 01, loved by fans for its “sexy” scent that smells quite different on individual wearers’ skins.
The original was a ground-breaking scent, made up of just one molecule – Iso E Super. The £5.99 Lacura rival combines it with “velvet and amber aromas that can strengthen over time” for a “mysterious scent that complements fierce femininity”.
Obviously Aldi isn’t offering identical versions to its designer “inspiration”, and we’re currently waiting to get our hands on bottles, but we’re certainly intrigued toto put them to the sniff test
As huge fans of Rituals, our eye has also been drawn by Lacura’s new Rice Milk & Cherry Blossom Gift Set which Aldi is touting as a cut-price alternative to Rituals £20.90 Ritual of Sakura.
The set includes a foaming shower gel, smoothing rice body scrub, nourishing hand lotion and relaxing body oil, all for £8.99. For that price, you should be able to afford to buy your mum a nice bottle of Aldi prosecco too.
All the products are available to pre-order online from 13 March, and will be in stores from 20 March while stocks last.
Will you be tempted to give them a whirl or will you be sticking with the OGs?
