Long-term relationships are rarely as easy as ABC.
Over time even the healthiest couples can start to take each other for granted, and it takes work to ensure you both feel appreciated, passionate and aren’t simply going through the motions.
Most therapists and experts recommend regular date nights to keep the spark alive. But there comes a point when dinner at the same restaurant you always visit or yet another trip to the cinema just won’t cut it.
That’s where alphabet dating comes in.
The concept is huge on TikTok right now, with over 107 million views on the hashtag and countless videos explaining its benefits.
As the name suggests, it involves going through the alphabet to choose your dates.
The activity you choose must start with the letter you’re on that week, so for A, you might go the aquarium, the amusement arcade or, if you’re a pair of adventurers, abseiling.

From there, you move to B (basketball, baking, beach, belly dancing), C (cycling, casino, cat cafe, canoeing), D (darts, disco, doughnuts, DIY) and so on.
The dates themselves can be as extravagant or low-key as you like – it’s more about switching things up and keeping your schedule interesting. Themed meals or games at home, for example, are budget-friendly and perfect for busy evenings, while special occasions might warrant outings requiring a touch more forethought.
You can also decide which of you arranges each date. Some people prefer to alternate weeks or keep plans as a surprise for their partner, but whatever suits your lifestyle and preferences as a couple is great.
Blogger Stephanie Booe, who has been working her way through the alphabet with her husband, said on Instagram: ‘It really does push us out of our comfort zone and challenges us to try new things together.’

She recommends including the odd daring and out of the ordinary date ‘if you can, when you can.’
‘Try to plan for something that you really think you could never do like parasailing, skydiving, hiking a tall mountain, or some other wild experience,’ wrote Stephanie.
‘The point of ABC Date Night is to get out of your comfort zone, so our challenge for you is to find one date night letter where you can do just that.’
They say the grass is greenest where you water it, so get out there and douse your relationship in excitement.
By the time you get to Z, your love will feel as sparkly and new as when you first met. You may even want to start all over again!
