An American man living in the UK has shared his surprise and joy at discovering a British custom that many of us take for granted.
David Escobedo, originally from Los Angeles but living in Chester while studying for a PHD, regularly takes to social media to share his thoughts about life in England.
During one video on TikTok, he addressed something he has noticed pub goers doing while having drinks.
He said: ‘I have another one, here we go. When I’ve been to pubs it’s pretty common for everyone to grab a drink and sit around a table.
‘And if they’re a little munchy they get a bag of crisps and tear open the crisps like a little plate and everyone, and they invite everyone to have crisps.’
David Escobedo, from Los Angeles but living in Chester, took to TikTok to point out a quaint British custom we often take for granted
Mr Escobedo, a PhD student, revealed he liked the act of sharing crisps in the pub even though he noted there are never many crisps in the packet
David went on to explain why he found the practice so fascinating.
He added: ‘Now in the United States, at least in Los Angeles, it’s pretty uncommon to eat in bars in general, unless it’s a bar and restaurant.
‘But something I think is interesting is, kinda like the community action of ripping open the bag of crisps, there is usually not very many crisps, and sharing it with everyone.
‘So to me it’s a really kind gesture, ’cause its like ‘I don’t have a lot, I am munchy, but I’m going to share what I have with everyone here.
‘So this gesture of sharing a torn open bag of crisps, which we would call chips in the United States, is really interesting to me and very communal.
‘It’s very like – what I have is yours, which I really like, it’s just very different.’
The heartwarming video has since gone viral attracting thousands of comments underneath.
One person replied to David: ‘It’s the law, you have to rip open the bag and put it in the middle of the table. Also with dry roasted peanuts.’
‘Thank you for reminding British people that they do very sweet things and don’t even notice,’ added another social media user.
Someone else gushed: ‘As a Brit, it’s these little things that we do but don’t notice that I love!!’
Another person replied: ‘Crisps – pub salad.’
‘It would be a bit rude not to share your crisps and we’d usually get a selection for the “plate”. Then fold the wrapper into a little triangle,’ added someone else.
It’s not the first time Americans have been charmed by our quaint customs and delicacies, with one US citizen even saying they ‘identify’ as a Brit.
Brits flooded the comments section to thank David for reminding them about these little things people forget they do and highlight the practise of ’rounds’
A man originally from Chicago loves Britain’s culture and weather so much that he now ‘identifies’ as a British man.
The social media star, who goes by the name Tlo, now lives in Florida but is obsessed with British food, TV shows and even the weather.
To show his commitment, Tlo, who didn’t wish to reveal his name, starts his days off with a ‘perfectly brewed cuppa’ and a ‘homemade chip butty’ while watching the British teen sitcom The Inbetweeners.
And his online UK followers now even send him suggestions of British snacks to try.
Tlo’ s first foray into British cuisine started when he ate beans and cheese on toast several years ago.
