US student takes to TikTok for advice on moving to Nottingham – and is advised to ‘start pre-drinking now’, watch The Inbetweeners as a ‘tutorial’ and to be prepared for a lot of swearing and pigeons

  • Landon Harris, 20, posted a TikTok in the hopes it would reach a UK audience
  • She asks for help from Brits as she’s set to move to Nottingham in a month’s time
  • One user tells the East Carolina student to go to Grimsby for her summer holiday

An American student who took to TikTok to ask British users for advice for her move to the UK in a month got a crash course in everything from Tesco meal deals to drunken nights out.

Landon Harris, 20, who currently studies at East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina, has been put on a student exchange programme to move to Nottingham.

In the video she shared on her TikTok account, which now has over 3.9million views, 439,000 likes and 45,000 comments, she received lots of advice about food and drink, with many recommending Wetherspoons and Tesco.

She was also advised to be prepared for a lot of swearing, pigeons everywhere, changeable weather and the sarcastic British sense of humour.

In the video Landon shared on her TikTok account, which now has over 3.9million views, 439,000 likes and 45,000 comments, she says: ‘If you’re from the UK, keep watching, because I need help’

Asking for advice, Landon explained: ‘If you’re from the UK, keep watching, because I need help.

‘So I’m moving to England in a month, specifically Nottingham, and my brain tells me it’s not different from the US but I know it is.

‘So if you have any advice for this little American, let me know.

‘If you want to be friends, let me know too, because I’ll take whatever I can get. See you in January!’

Some advised watching various British television shows like The Inbetweeners, Gavin and Stacey and children’s programme Horrible Histories to get educated.

A fair few also acknowledged our greetings and what they actually mean, telling Landon that when we say ‘You alright?’ we actually just mean ‘Hello’.

The typical differences in language came up too, advising her not to refer to football as soccer.

In a particularly funny comment, user Benjamin told Landon: ‘Book your summer holiday in Grimsby, it’s the most beautiful part of the UK.’

Landon’s video reached the target audience of the UK, with Brits commenting funny, sometimes sarcastic bits of advice

One user, called Grackle, said: ‘STAND ON THE RIGHT, WALK ON THE LEFT WHEN GOING UP ESCALATORS!

‘If you just stand in the middle people will tut and get passive aggressive lol.’

Another user said: ‘If you go in a kebab shop at the end of the night and don’t address the server as ‘bossman’ they kick you out.’

And on the topic of tea, Ben Ellis said: ‘If you don’t want a cup of tea, your friend shouldn’t force it on you. Only take a cup of tea if you want it.’

For advice on alcoholic drinks, user named Eleanor added: ‘You’ll be shocked how much about how much British people drink on what they call a “chill night of drinking” – if you can keep up, good for you.’

Similarly, the sage advice of another commenter was to ‘start pre-drinking now’.

Emily Daysh gave some dating advice to Landon: ‘If you fancy a boy and he said he could have been a pro footballer if it wasn’t for his injury, run as quick as you can.’

In another video, she explains that the three location options put to her were Nottingham, Essex and Edinburgh, which was her first choice, but fell through.

In the clip, she answers a user who asks why she’s off to Nottingham: ‘I’ve gotten this question at least three thousand times.

‘I’m coming for uni, and I think it’s so cute that you guys call it that. We just call it college here, but yeah, I’m coming for that.

The 20-year-old student from North Carolina is moving to the UK in January and had the options to live in Nottingham, Edinburgh and Essex

Landon got some advice relating to food and drink, with many noting our glorious Tesco meal deals and the Wetherspoons app coming in handy when ordering a drink at the pub

Landon made a follow-up video to answer the questions of many, ‘Why Nottingham?’ to explain: ‘I’ve gotten this question at least three thousand times. I’m coming for uni, and I think it’s so cute that you guys call it that. We just call it college here, but yeah, I’m coming for that’

‘I’m doing an exchange programme through my school/company, so there were only so many schools that offered the same exchange programme.

‘The one that I’m going to in Nottingham is partnered with the company that I’m going through.

‘For the record, my only other option was to go to Essex, so, I don’t know, wherever they were going to put me, they were going to put me – but I’m excited!

‘America is not that special, that’s why I want to leave!’
