Amy Schumer claims she was trolled for calling Will Smith’s infamous 2022 Oscars slap “traumatizing.”
“People made fun of me for saying that was traumatizing,” the “Life After Beth” star, 40, said on SiriusXM’s “The Howard Stern Show” Wednesday (via E! News).
She then clarified, “But I don’t think it was traumatizing for me. I think it was traumatizing for all of us.”
However, Schumer previously wrote in a now-deleted Instagram post after Smith, 53, slapped Chris Rock on stage at the March 27 awards show, “Still triggered and traumatized.”
She added, “I love my friend @chrisrock and believe he handled it like a pro. Stayed up there and gave an Oscar to his friend @questlove and the whole thing was so disturbing.”
The “Inside Amy Schumer” star then went on to say at Las Vegas’ Mirage Theater as part of the Aces of Comedy series earlier this month, “It was just a f–king bummer. All I can say is that it was really sad, and I think it says so much about toxic masculinity.”
During the Academy Awards, Rock, 57, made a “G.I. Jane 2” joke in reference to Jada Pinkett Smith, who suffers from alopecia, having a shaved head, prompting Smith to walk on stage and smack the comedian.
Although it appears Schumer is now backtracking on her initial remarks a bit on Stern’s show, her Oscars co-host Wanda Sykes agreed with her first statement.
Sykes, 58, told Ellen DeGeneres after the star-studded ceremony that she, too, felt traumatized.
“I just felt so awful for my friend Chris,” the comic said. “And it was sickening. … I physically felt ill, and I’m still a little traumatized by it.”
Since the incident, Smith has apologized to Rock and resigned from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
The Academy later announced that the “King Richard” star is banned from all of the organization’s events for 10 years.
