An Erinsborough bypass or just Bouncer’s dream? Readers tell us how Neighbours should end

All the homes on Ramsay Street are being compulsorily acquired for a mega Erinsborough Bypass. But before residents pack up and bulldozers start rolling in, perhaps there might be a little time for one last flute of Spumante and a street party with old friends?

In particular, two old friends: Scott Robinson and Charlene Mitchell.

The cast of Neighbours in 1989.

These were the most common responses among Age and Herald readers when we asked them what their ideal end was for Neighbours. And just like in 1985, the characters and storylines of Ramsay Street fed naturally into the national conversation again.

“Could the whole thing have just been Bouncer’s dream?” proposed one reader. Others called for sinkholes, plane crashes, resurrections – but no cliffhangers, please.

Here are some of the responses, a few have been edited for brevity.

The cars that ate Ramsay Street

“Let’s give it a real Melbourne ending. To build Victoria’s newest freeway, Ramsay Street is earmarked for compulsory acquirement. Everyone has to move out and the last scene is the street being bulldozed and in the middle of civil works. Just before the credits roll, we hear the smooth sounds of Barry Crocker’s career masterpiece (the original thanks, none of this modern fan-dangled stuff), and we see the bones of Mrs Mangel being dug up, or is it Bouncer the Dog, or maybe even the Blakeney Twins (evil Paul had a hand in it for sure). Alas, Robbo comes through with his huge excavator and a promise of a sausage roll inside a bread roll for morning tea, and we’ll never know who the mysterious bones belonged to, as Robbo, in his haste to get to the little take-away shop down the road, steams through and crushes them with the excavator bucket. We might not have solved the mystery, but we take comfort in the fact that a neighbour helped contribute to the greatest engineering feat Victoria has ever seen, the Erinsborough bypass.” – Fin

“The state government compulsory buys up all the houses on Ramsay Street to build a new mega resort with casino. Everyone moves out and the developers move in.” – Tayla

“Why not art imitating life? The Eastern Freeway needs widening. All homes in Ramsay Street are being compulsorily acquired for the widening. The owners take their payouts, start looking for new places to live and before the bulldozers come through, have one last street party. Everyone comes back for one last cup of Tang or plastic flute of spumante.” – Nina

A ‘Scarlene’ special

“Surely it has to end with a knocking on a door followed by its opening to reveal Scott and Charlene standing there.” – Mike

“I don’t care as long as it has Kylie in it. C’mon you are not telling me her moving back to Australia is a coincidence?” – Unknown

“Get Kylie and Jason to pop by!” – Michelle

“Kylie comes back with a bloke and three kids. They buy the old bank and turn it into a restaurant called Neighbours. The last scene is a fly over aerial into the restaurant where a reunion is in full swing. Then a fly out resembling Harry Potter up, up and away.” – Margaret

Plane crash wipes out Ramsay Street

“Maybe with a plane crash that wiped out all of Ramsay Street.” – Mark

“I think the show should end in Ramsay Street with a big explosion or a plane crashing in the street.” – Carmen

“All the classic characters who were killed off should come back for one massive street party.” – Vanessa

Many readers want a final visit from Scott and Charlene.

Sinkholes, resurrections or Bouncer’s dream?

“Ramsay street is demolished for apartments – the gentrification of Erinsborough.” – John

“I definitely don’t want Paul to get Terese back, she should hook up with Glen.” – Noeline

“Think a happy ending for everyone with Paul and Terese get back together … would like to see them happy.” – Carol

“All the other people who is still alive should come back to do the final show.” – Samantha

“All the houses in the street are bought by The Block.” – Michael

“It was all a dream by the dog.” – James

“Let’s have a flood (global warming) and wash away the houses. Everybody has to move out. Karl and Susan can go and see Malcolm. And I’m sure they’ll all have some other long-lost relatives they have to visit or to stay. Lot’s of former actors can return for one time and help everybody to move or bring donations.” – Andi

“A bunch of developers move on Ramsay Street and buy up the whole street to turn it into a Japanese golf resort. All the old neighbours come back for a final farewell at the new golf club, but chaos ensues as the old feuds and betrayals are revisited.

Longest-serving cast member, the one sane and sorted neighbour of them all, Susan Kennedy (Jackie Woodburn) gets sick of all the arguing and storms out of the party. But as she goes to leave, she gets hit on the head and knocked out with a golf ball.

All the other neighbours stand around in horror, believing Susan has been killed and trying to revive her. The screen starts to fade away as Susan seems to be drifting away to some neighbourly heaven. Fade to black … Former young nurse Maggie Gordon (Jackie Woodburn) from Grundys soapie stablemate The Young Doctors wakes up in her bed.

She is older now, and is the matron of the Albert Memorial Hospital. She’s had a terrible nightmare. She wakes up her husband, the former senior doctor at the hospital with whom she had an affair when young but is now happily married to.

She tells him ‘I’ve had a terrible nightmare! I was a married middle-class teacher in the Melbourne suburbs, with a loving family whose lives fell apart after a doctor I was married to cheated on me having a torrid affair!

The lives of the people of the street were so intertwined this set the scene for four decades of ensuing drama, intrigue and the occasional relocation to Brisbane!’

Maggie’s husband: ‘Wow, what a crazy dream, must be all that Japanese food we ate last night giving you nightmares, I mean … nobody in Australia is friends with that many of their neighbours!’

Maggie: ‘yeah I know, it was a silly dream, who needs neighbours when back at The Albert Hospital we have the perfect blend of good friends! Go back to sleep love. A new day tomorrow for all our Young Doctors and Nurses….’

Bedroom lights switched out and roll end credits … End credits of The Young Doctors including theme music. Thus setting up a reboot of The Young Doctors with Jackie Woodburn on the starring role …” – Luke
