There’s nothing quite like getting out of the office for a few days to rest and recharge your batteries. However, if you rush your holidays by trying to cram them into a few short days, they can become a source of stress. By planning out your holiday across the year around weekends and Bank Holidays, you can enjoy some long stretches of leave, while leaving your annual leave allowance intact.
By following this guide to booking annual leave in 2022, you can turn 22 days of annual leave into 54 days of holiday.
Thanks to the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee next year, celebrating 70 years of her Majesty on the throne, Britons have an extra Bank Holiday weekend: a four-day weekend in the first week of June.
Bear in mind, these tips will only apply if your job doesn’t involve working weekends or bank holidays. This should be set out in your contract of employment.
Also, your workplace is entitled to ask you to rearrange your leave if too many employees are asking for popular dates off.
Here’s which dates to book off, by month.
January
Monday January 3, 2022, is the first Bank Holiday of the year, because New Year’s Day falls on a Saturday.
Therefore, by booking off January 4 to January 7, you’ll have nine days of holiday, using just four days of leave.
Dates to book off: January 4, 5, 6, 7
April
The Easter Bank Holiday covers Good Friday on April 15 and Easter Monday on April 18.
By booking April 19 to April 25, you can have a 10 day holiday, while using only four days of annual leave.
Dates to book off: April 19, 20, 21, 22
May
The early May Bank Holiday means no office on May 2, 2022.
Take off the rest of the first week of May as leave, and you’re out of office from April 30 to May 9: that’s nine days’ holiday but only four from your annual allowance.
Dates to book off: May 3, 4, 5, 6

June
Next year, lucky Britons get a bonus four day weekend at the beginning of June.
The late May Bank Holiday has been pushed back to June 2, 2022, but there’s a bonus Bank Holiday this year on June 3, to commemorate 70 years of Queen Elizabeth II.
Book May 30, May 31 and June 1 off work, and you’ll be out of office for nine days, from May 28 to June 6.
Dates to book off: May 30, 31, June 1
August/September
Monday August 29, 2022, is a bank holiday but by booking off the rest of that week, you’ll be able to enjoy nine days away from work, losing only four days from your annual leave.
Dates to book off: August 30, 31, September 1, 2
December
Christmas Day falls on a Sunday in 2022, so Tuesday December 27 is a bank holiday to make up for it, in addition to Boxing Day on Monday 26.
By booking off Wednesday to Friday of the last week of the year, you’ll be getting 10 days off work, including New Year’s Day and January 2, 2023.
Dates to book off: December 28, 29, 30
If you work full-time (five days a week) you are entitled to 28 days of annual leave.
Different workplaces have different policies when it comes to how and when you can book your leave, so make sure you are familiar with the rules of your workplace.
