And he requested his wife be taken care of, writing: “I regret only for the women we leave behind”. The letter is one of 12 that Capt Scott, pictured right, is known to have written to friends and family while stranded in his tent in his final days.
He wrote it on March 16, 1912, the day he recorded in his diary the disappearance of fellow explorer Captain Lawrence Oates. The former army captain wandered into the -40C Antarctic tundra after uttering the famous words: “I may be some time”.
Bonhams in London, says the document, which goes under the hammer on November 22, is “the most important” item of the ill-fated Terra Nova expedition to come up for auction.
