The Humboldt penguins were born at the Chessington World of Adventures Resort in April and May as the park began to welcome back visitors again. The newborns join Chessington’s colony of Humboldt penguins, which can be visited by guests going to the theme park.
The hatchlings are the result of the Resort’s breeding programme, which is aiming to boost the number of vulnerable creatures at Chessington.
Humboldt penguins are typically found on the coasts of Chile and Peru and are considered to be an endangered species.
They typically stay with the same partner for life after forming a lifelong connection with them.
Five different couples in Chessington’s colony successfully birthed chicks this year, with the newborns all hatching between April 16 and May 7.
Two of the happy parents were Junior and Kammy, the latter of which is named after ex-footballer Chris Kamara.
Mr Kamara visited the colony of penguins last year, forming a special bond with the group during his time with them.
All of the chicks are yet to be named but are healthy and doing well so far.
Sam Whitbread, Zoo Collections Manager at Chessington World of Adventures Resort, shared their elation at the park’s new additions.
