Boris and Carrie Johnson have enjoyed a winter sojourn in Venice after they jetted into the Italian city to attend the wedding of Tory MP Nicholas True’s daughter Sophia.

Ms True, who has worked as a press advisor for the Conservative Party since 2017, wed political secretary Declan Lyons on Saturday, with Britain’s high society decamping to La Serenissima to celebrate the nuptials.

It’s thought Michael Gove was also in attendance at the wedding of the ‘political power couple’, who met while working in Downing Street.

Carrie, 34, who shares two children Wilf, two, and Romy, one, with the former Prime Minister, 58, shared a string of photos of the couple’s weekend on Instagram, including Boris staring whimsically around famous tourist spot St Mark’s Square.

Boris and Carrie flew into Venice late on Friday and were spotted at the £600 a night Hotel Danieli on the waterfront which is a popular haunt for A list celebrities who are visiting.

Further photos showed the happy couple inside the church, cutting their cake and enjoying a first dance, alongside images of a traditional Venetian spaghetti dish.

The wife of the former PM is a long-standing friend of Ms True; in 2108 they hit the campaign trail together in Richmond ahead of the last general election.

True, who is the daughter of Lord and Lady True, announced her engagement to Mr Lyons in the Telegraph a year ago.

The wedding took place in the historic San Zaccaria church and although the weather was on the wet and grey side Italian custom has a saying that a ‘wet bride will be a lucky bride’.

Sources in Italy said the couple tied the knot in Venice as Sophia’s father is a ‘lover of all things Italian’ and they have a house there.

In an interview with an Italian publication Lord True previously said:’ Every educated person must love Italy and Italian culture, the cradle of world culture.

‘From a young age I was fascinated by the history of the Romans and my parents took me to look at castles. I studied Byzantine history and I have often visited Venice and lived in Rome for many years.

‘We have a house in Italy and it is a very long story, a love story, Italy is part of my life, I love this country and I love the Italian people.’

A photo of the newlyweds cutting a grand three-tier cake was shared to Carrie’s Story on Instagram

The Roman Catholic ceremony was carried out by a Benedictine priest based at Downside school in Somerset who flew over specially for the event.

Father Robert Donadoni, the local priest at San Zaccaria, said: ‘It was a wonderful ceremony and there were about 180 guests and they were all British and very respectful.

‘I have known the bride’s family for some time and when they are in Venice they attend Mass here.’

On Friday, Carrie shared adorable pictures of her daughter Romy’s first birthday.  Snaps shared on Carrie’s Instagram showed Romy looking eagerly at her birthday cake, and opening a mountain of presents. Another snap showed the little girl riding a small tricycle around the house.

Carrie also shared adorable pictures of her daughter’s first year, including one where she dressed as a bear, a snap of her and the family dog Dilyn and one with her big brother Wilfred, who is two.

Carrie shared a gushing message on her Instagram account, writing her daughter ‘makes her life more cheery’

Festivities continued on with Romy playing around the house on a toy bike with purple learning wheels

She was later treated to a chocolate cake with ‘Romy is One’ written in frosting. After cake, Romy took a ride around the house on a children’s bike with learning wheels.

The toddler, who was wearing a dotted white and pink dress, can be seen looking at her cake with envy.

The post also includes pictures of Romy taken during her first year on Earth, including one of a sweet hug with her mother when she was a baby.

Romy, whose second names are Iris Charlotte, was born on December 9 last year. She is the couple’s second baby together and at least the former Prime Minister’s seventh child.

She was born at University College London Hospital and was named after Carrie’s aunt Rosemary.

When announcing their daughter’s name, Boris and Carrie explained how Iris came from the Greek word meaning rainbow and Charlotte was chosen as a tribute for Boris’s late mum who they ‘miss so much’.

By choosing Romy as a nod to Carrie’s aunt Rosemary, the couple followed in the footsteps of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle by using a relative’s nickname rather than the person’s actual moniker – like the Sussexes did by opting for the Queen’s pet name Lilibet, rather than Elizabeth.
