Boy George’s Grade-II listed Gothic north London mansion on sale for £17m

Boy George has listed his north London mansion up for sale for a whopping £17million.

The 61 year old has lived at the Italian-inspired Hampstead mansion for nearly 40 years, having bought the incredible space back in the mid-1980s.

The incredible space underwent a three-year renovation, which started with the singer embroiled in a battle with Camden Council to get planning permission to extend the property. During the renovations, Boy George stayed in a flat in Soho.

Approximately 11 years ago, OK! was invited to his characterful Gothic abode in the capital. Resplendent with colourful paintings, religious artefacts and quirky memorabilia – including a cast of David Bowie’s face – it was every bit as flamboyant as his 80s pop star persona.

Renowned for his waspish wit, George was in fact a congenial host, welcoming us in and whipping off his sequinned hat to give us a glimpse of his heavily tattooed scalp.

The 5,453 square feet space, which is listed on Right Move, boasts six bedrooms – of which five come complete with ensuite bathrooms. Meanwhile, one room has a giant skylight.

His home also has a room solely dedicated to meditation as well as a cinema room, where he and guests can get comfortable with a bowl of popcorn.

At the time that OK! was invited in, Boy George spoke out about being both sober and quitting his 20-a-day cigarette habit. Discussing the root of his addictions, he told OK!: “I don’t think I was happy with what I had before. I felt something was missing.”

Never much of a drinker, partly as a reaction to his aunt and uncle’s demise from alcohol-related diseases, he also extolled the virtues of ditching drugs, explaining: “When you’re sober, you see how other people behave and realise you don’t want to be like that.”

His infamous, often-quoted comment about preferring “a nice cup of tea” to sex will probably always haunt him, but George spoke freely about his love life, including his volatile affair with Culture Club drummer Jon Moss at the height of the band’s success.

He added: “I don’t know if any of my past relationships have been love. I love my ex-boyfriend Michael [Dunne] in a way I didn’t when I was with him – I really care about him now. It’s the same with Jon. Quite often I’ve had to lose them to love them in a healthy way.”

With his two Staffordshire Bull Terriers, Reggie and Taylor, as his constant companions, he seemed quite content to be single. “I have friends but nothing serious,” said George at the time.

“If someone’s going to put their imprint on my life, they have to be pretty damn special. I don’t want another dysfunctional relationship," he added.

Asked if he had a type, George told OK!: “When you’re older, you have to be more realistic. I like stunning Tom Hardy types, but also odd-looking people – I love a big nose, humour, someone who’s got balls and a sense of themselves. Someone can be drop-dead gorgeous and I won’t find them attractive. I’ll find the person who’s giving me no attention attractive.”

His friend Elton John had only recently become a dad to Zachary, his first son born via surrogacy. Had George considered the idea of fatherhood for himself? “It’s not for me – I can just about look after two dogs!” he joked.

He admitted his acid tongue had been known for getting him into trouble. Referring to some choice words he’d once uttered about Madonna, he told OK!, “I’ve said some horrible things about her in the past, I’m not proud of that. I have a weird admiration for her. She’s never been f****d up.”

He also expressed a fondness for actor Tom Cruise, saying, “I like Tom Cruise. I don’t care that he’s a Scientologist – as long as you don’t hurt animals or children and you’re nice to your mum!”
