Britney Spears revealed she received a letter inviting her to speak to Congress about her controversial conservatorship that birthed the #FreeBritney movement.
“I received this letter months ago … An invitation to share my story … I was immediately flattered and at the time I wasn’t nearly at the healing stage I’m in now,” Spears, 40, wrote in a post to Instagram Wednesday along with a photo of the letter dated Dec. 1, 2021.
The “Toxic” singer wrote that she was “grateful” her experience was “even ACKNOWLEDGED” and that the letter gave her validation.
“I felt heard and like I mattered for the first time in my life !!!” she explained.
Spears said the outreach was especially meaningful given her estrangement from her family, who put her in the conservatorship in February 2008 and allowed it to continue for nearly 14 years while the pop star raked in millions of dollars.
“In a world 🌎 where your own family goes against you, it’s actually hard to find people that get it and show empathy 🤷♀️🙄 !!!!” she wrote. “Again, I’m not here to be a victim although I’m the first to admit I’m pretty messed up by it all … I want to help others in vulnerable situations, take life by the balls and be brave 💪 !!!”
She continued, “I wish I would have been … I was so scared and nothing is worse than your own family doing what they did to me … I’m lucky to have a small circle of adorable friends who I can count on … In the mean time thank you to Congress for inviting me to the White House.”
The letter, signed by Congress members Charlie Crist and Swalwell, congratulated Spears and her attorney, Mathew Rosengart, on their victory in terminating the pop star’s conservatorship in November 2021.
“There is no doubt that your story will empower countless others outside the millions that are already inspired by you and your art,” the letter stated. “Please know that you have absolutely no obligation to do anything more but fight for yourself, but if you are willing, we would appreciate learning more about the emotional and financial turmoil you faced within the conservatorship system.”
The representatives added that they were particularly “concerned” about a Los Angeles judge appointing a lawyer to Spears’ case at the onset of the conservatorship rather than allowing her to choose her own. (She eventually retained Rosengart in July 2021.)
Spears’ father, Jamie Spears, served as her main conservator for more than a decade before his suspension in September 2021, three months after she testified in court that the legal arrangement was “abusive” and controlled every aspect of her life.
Since being freed from the conservatorship and winning back control of her estate, Britney has gone on several tirades against her family members, including mom Lynne Spears and sister Jamie Lynn Spears.
