Doing our bit to combat climate change is the top reason for change ‑ more than half think next year is the last chance to save the planet. But helping local wildlife and cutting energy bills are also big motivators.
More than half of those polled said simply understanding how central heating works would help them be greener. The most popular resolution is to recycle more, followed by buying food with less packaging.
Switching off lights in unoccupied rooms, taking reusable bags shopping and turning off unused gadgets are next on the list.
Not leaving the tap running while cleaning teeth, refilling water bottles, layering up instead of whacking up the heating, eating less meat and not heating an empty house round off the top 10.
Marc Robson, of British Gas which commissioned the poll of 2,000 people, advised: “It’s best to start small with a resolution you can stick to.
“Then you can add to or extend it when you’re ready.”
