Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall married in 2005, and the couple now live together at their Gloucestershire home of Highgrove. The couple always look at ease when attending royal engagements together or jetting off on royal tours. But in the decades before Camilla was Charles’ wife and the two were friends, Camilla always appeared far less confident in public than she does now.
Body language expert Darren Stanton told Express.co.uk on behalf of Coffee Friend that Camilla often seemed “uncomfortable” in the spotlight.
He explained: “In early photographs, Camilla had a tendency to hide her true feelings, she appeared closed off.
“Not only would she create a barrier with her body while keeping a distance from Charles, she hid her hands in her pockets – a tell-tale sign of someone feeling anxious and tense or who finds themselves in a sensitive situation.
“In the old days, a lot of her expressions were quite controlled and not genuine.
“She may be smiling but secretly she feels awkward and uncomfortable.”
However, the body language expert pointed out Camilla’s body language has changed drastically since she became a member of the Royal Family.
Camilla finally married Prince Charles in 2005, and the pair regularly appeared at royal events and trips together in the years to follow.
Mr Stanton said: “This is a direct contrast to Camilla’s body language in recent years, now she is an established member of the Royal Family.
“As her relationship with Charles developed, photographs were released showing the couple becoming closer and closer through their body language.
“We see Camilla relax in his company and mirror Charles’ movements – positioning her body towards his and matching gestures he makes with his hands.
“This reflects the strength of their connection as a couple and the deep rapport they share – they appear to move as one person.”
According to Mr Stanton, Camilla indicates with her body language that she “feels protected” by Charles.

He explained: “Camilla is also often seen holding Charles’ arm, this indicates that she depends on him and feels protected by her husband.
“It’s not uncommon for her and Charles to hold hands or sit very close to one another and Camilla’s emotional displays have become more genuine, suggesting her romance with Charles is still as happy and healthy as ever – or potentially even stronger than it’s been before.”
On a few occasions in recent years, Charles has gushed about his wife during interviews with the press.
He told CNN in 2015: “It’s always marvelous to have somebody who, you know, you feel understands and wants to encourage.
“Although she certainly pokes fun if I get too serious about things. And all that helps.”
And the couple have given royal fans a rare insight into their happy family life on their official Clarence House social media channels too.
In 2020, Charles and Camilla celebrated 15 years of marriage at their Scottish home of Birkhall.
