‘Canada’s Got Talent’ Returns After 10 Years

Canada’s got Drake, Justin Bieber, Carly Rae Jepsen, and now it’s “Got Talent,” too.

The global Fremantle format makes its triumphant return after 10 years off air, heading to Rogers Sports & Media-backed channel Citytv for a local adaptation of Simon Cowell’s hit talent show. “Canada’s Got Talent” enjoyed just a single season on Citytv back in 2012, with judges including actor Martin Short, opera singer Measha Brueggergosman and musician Stephan Moccio.

The format will make its comeback in partnership with Fremantle and McGillivray Entertainment Media Inc., who are on board as producers. Production will kick off this fall, with a premiere set for spring 2022. Citytv has signed on for a nine-episode run.

Cowell has judged on “Britain’s Got Talent” and “America’s Got Talent” for several years, and Variety understands he will have some on-screen involvement in the Canadian edition as well. The executive, who broke his back last year, recently pulled out of “X Factor Israel,” but didn’t provide a specific reason.

“We’ve seen so many talented people from Canada over the years and we always said we’ve got to make this show again,” said Cowell. “I am so excited ‘Canada’s Got Talent’ is returning and believe it will be an amazing experience. I would like to personally thank Citytv for giving the show and all of the contestants this opportunity.”

Michela Di Mondo, executive VP of distribution and sales for Canada at Fremantle, added: “We are incredibly excited to be expanding our partnership with Citytv to continue to showcase a wide range of quality feel-good entertainment programming to Canadian audiences. This is a testament to the strength of the ‘Got Talent’ format and we are absolutely thrilled to be introducing a local version of this globally renowned format into the region. We cannot wait to see the new and extraordinary talent that ‘Canada’s Got Talent’ will discover.”

The expanded partnership gives advertisers access to the “Got Talent” YouTube inventory in Canada, which draws 250 million views annually. Now in its 16th season, “America’s Got Talent” consistently delivers for Citytv. The program was the channel’s top show for adults aged 25-54 in 2020.

Since its launch in 2006, “Got Talent” has been sold into 75 territories and watched by over one billion viewers worldwide, according to distributor Fremantle, which sells the finished tape and format. The show was created by Cowell and is co-owned by Syco Entertainment and Fremantle.
