Car names you’ve probably been pronouncing wrong – from BMW to Hyundai

We may love our car, or be drooling after a new one – but many of us don’t even know how to pronounce their names correctly.

Select Car Leasing has looked into the correct way to pronounce automotive brands.

Is it Porsche or Porsh-ah? To settle the debate once and for all Select commissional a survey of 1,000 Brits to pick out some of the most mispronounced carmakers.

They also hired 10 professional voice actors from across the world to reveal how they should sound – so if you’re still unsure you can check.

When it comes to BMW you may think you’ve got it down – how wrong can you go with three letters after all?

Well, it turns out you’ve been pronouncing BMW wrong all along, with 90% getting it wrong.

In the German alphabet, W is pronounced as V, making the correct pronunciation bee-em-vee.

To make things even more confusing, V is pronounced the same way F is, which means Volkswagen is pronounced fokes-vah-gun.

That means VW is actually pronounced eff-vee.

Meanwhile, if you’ve been saying Porsh-ah, like Joey from Friends, you’ve been pronouncing Porsche correctly.

Nearly 90% of respondents disagree about the right way to pronounce Skoda – which is actually shkoh-dah.

The second-most mispronounced car brand on the list is Hyundai.

The South Korean brand is usually known as hi-un-di to Brits, but the correct way of saying it is hun-day.

Meanwhile, you could be forgiven for mispronouncing Swedish supercar maker Koenigsegg.

The correct way of saying it is koh-nig-zegg, which an extra emphasis on the double G.

Lancia has faded in popularity, but if you still want to know how to pronounce it correctly, it’s lan-chah.

Despite being a Romanian brand, most respondents got Dacia right – dah-chah.
