Just in time for its 20th anniversary season, Cinespia makes its return to the Hollywood Forever Cemetery for a summer of cinema under the stars, with a lineup of screenings including, “The Silence of the Lambs,” “The Addams Family,” “Pulp Fiction” and “The Wizard of Oz.”
“Dazed and Confused” and “Dirty Dancing” will kickoff the official summer lineup, presented by Amazon Studios, with screenings over the fourth of July holiday weekend, both followed by the Cinespia’s annual fireworks display.
“As we are getting ready to celebrate our 20th year, Cinespia’s return has become something very different,” the organization’s founder John Wyatt said while announcing the 2021 lineup. “Now we will be celebrating the awakening of life in our city. I can’t think of a better way to do that than gathering at Hollywood Forever in person to laugh, cry and cheer together.”
Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Cinespia had shifted to a drive-in and outdoor picnic model, with events held at the Greek Theatre. Cinespia will continue hosting events at the popular location through July, offering multiple venues for their summer programming.
“This past year really made me appreciate all the incredible people that come to Cinespia every summer,” Alia Penner, the organization’s creative director, added. “I really missed seeing people celebrating their birthdays, performing surprise proposals, dressing up in picture-perfect costumes for the photo booth. Everyone at Cinespia is so excited to bring it this season for an unforgettable 20th year of movies, memories and pure joy.”
Before the official start of the season, the organization has partnered with Los Angeles Pride for a special screening of “The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert” on Saturday, June 26. Partners for the “kaleidoscopic celebration” include Toyota Mirai and Bud Light Seltzer.
Cinespia, which again counts DTS as their audio partner for the 2021 season and Diageo as the spirits sponsor, has been screening movies at the iconic Los Angeles landmark since 2002, when it first presented “Strangers on a Train” for a few hundred people. The outdoor event now regularly hosts crowds of up to 4,000 moviegoers on the cemetery’s famed Fairbanks Lawn.
“Hollywood Forever is thrilled to welcome back Cinespia and all the lovers of great films in Los Angeles,” said Jay Boileu, Hollywood Forever’s EVP & director of events. “We’re looking forward to sharing this quintessential L.A. summer experience with all of you again under the stars on The Fairbanks Lawn.”
The full lineup of screenings is below:
Saturday, July 3 – “Dazed and Confused” followed by fireworks
Celebrate the highs of high school and the rockin’ pleasures of the 1970s with a motley crew on their final day of school. The kids are mostly alright in Richard Linklater’s love letter to teenage life showcases a group of seniors on the fringe as a late night outdoor party brings everyone together. The free photo booth is back and better than ever, and DJ sets continue the party after the film. Stick around after the film for a panorama of firework magic in honor of the holiday weekend!
Sunday, July 4 – “Dirty Dancing” followed by fireworks
Have the time of your life at a special Fourth of July Spectacular! Daddy’s girl Baby (Jennifer Grey) catches a glimpse of bad boy dancer Johnny Castle (Patrick Swayze) practicing his moves in a Catskills resort. When Johnny loses his partner for a forthcoming competition, can Baby go from spaghetti arms to Johnny’s partner in dance and love? Nobody puts Baby in the corner! Put on your dancing shoes for our free themed photo booth. After the film sit back as a firework spectacle illuminates the Hollywood Forever Cemetery.
Saturday, July 10 – “The Silence of the Lambs”
Jodie Foster shines as Agent Clarice Starling, the smart but young trainee that must stop a serial killer before he strikes again. Anthony Hopkins’ famous role as the brilliant psychotic criminal Hannibal Lector can terrify even the most jaded horror fan, but it’s Jodie’s sensitive performance that steals the show. A roller coaster that plunges guests into the depths of fear, and a masterpiece of filmmaking that won five Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress and Best Screenplay. See it in the cemetery if you dare! DJ Spins before and after the screening.
Saturday, July 17 – “The Addams Family”
Bring the family and hang out with the creepiest and kookiest clan of the silver screen, The Addams Family! A fantastic all star cast made up of none other than Anjelica Huston, Christina Ricci, Christopher Lloyd and the late Raul Julia, make for genuinely great (and demented) comedy. The elaborate big budget sets and zany camera moves make this one of the most strange, inventive and hilarious comedies of the 90s. Join us for this special picnic and screening under the stars! A themed photo booth will be open for your own ghoulish family portraits.
Saturday, July 24 – “Pulp Fiction”
Widely regarded as Tarantino’s masterpiece, with particular praise for its screenwriting. The self-reflexivity, unconventional structure, and extensive homage and pastiche have led critics to describe it as a touchstone of postmodern film. Enjoy this film under the stars while enjoying a themed photo booth and fun tunes from your favorite DJ’s ahead of the screening.
Saturday, July 31 – “The Wizard of Oz”
Celebrate the life of Judy Garland on the occasion of the unveiling of her new resting place at Hollywood Forever Cemetery. Starring the incomparable Judy Garland in her greatest role, The Wizard of Oz is the musical that embodies everything there is to love about classic Hollywood: fantasy, song, beautiful sets and a sixteen year old starlet who took motion pictures by storm! Dorothy and Toto are transported by a cyclone from an ordinary Kansas life to a weird and wonderful kingdom where a wizard rules the land.
