As millions of Brits continue to enjoy the scorching summer weather, reaching for an ice-cold beverage or a paddling pool to cool off is a must.
But if you’re thinking of reviving the old paddling pool from your attic or garage then you better beware, as filling it up could be costly.
According to data fromUswitch, it all depends on how big your pool is and how you pay your water bill. So, here’s what you need to know before taking a splash. The company says it won’t cost you any extra to fill up a paddling pool if you’re on an unmetered contract.
Why? because your bill is not based on how much water you use – instead, it's based on a standard charge.
But if you’re a water-metre customer and pay for the exact amount of water you use, you could see your bill shoot up by as much as £16 to fill your pool up.
Swimming pools come in a range of sizes, but the smallest standard size is usually 6ft wide – enough room to fit three to four kids in. These sized pools can hold up to 3,000 litres of water – and filling it up will cost you £9.60 every time you use it.
An 8ft paddling pool will cost you £14.40 per dip, while a 10ft pool – room enough for the whole family to fit in – will cost you £16, which is the equivalent cost of around 140 showers or 65 baths.
So if you’re using your pool once a week and filling it up each time, that could add-on up to £64 each month onto your bill, theSunreports.
Will Owen, an energy expert at Uswitch, said: “A paddling pool is a great way to cool down, but filling it up could be costly if you’re on a water metre.”
As the evening often brings a cooler temperature, some people may want to splurge on a hot tub for the garden, but the company warns that it could cost 49p per hour just to heat the water.
But there are ways to keep from having to refill your pool and wasting water, according to Uswitch, using sterilising tablets and a filter could make it last for the whole summer.
Some water companies often let customers trial a metre for up to two years with the ability to switch back if they are unsatisfied.
CCW websiteoffers you an online calculator which estimates how much you could save. You'll need information on how much water your household uses and how much you currently pay. – this information will be on previous bills.
