Diana the Musical casts Denise Welch as beloved Royal

Diana: The Musical trailer released by Netflix

Diana the Musical, the heavily-criticised musical dramatisation of Princess Diana’s life, is hitting West End stages later this year.

The production was previously brought to life for the first time in 2021 on Broadway in New York, New York.

Shortly thereafter, Diana the Musical hit Netflix screens around the world where it garnered a staggering amount of bad reviews and criticisms.

London will host a live version of Diana the Musical at Eventim Apollo in Hammersmith for one night only this December.

Today, the cast of the show has been announced, with Denise Welch starring as the matriarch of the story: Queen Elizabeth II.

Welch posted the news on her social media accounts in glee to her fans.

The Loose Women star showed off the musical’s poster, while captioning it: “Queeeeeeeen!!”

The 65-year-old actress and TV personality then followed up with some details about the experience, adding: “Diana The Musical in concert. Dec 4th. Apollo Hammersmith.” (sic)

Opposite Welch is Anything Goes’ Kerry Ellis, who is playing Diana, Princess of Wales in the production.

Diana the Musical has already gathered some vicious reviews, with one viewer saying calling it “genuinely painful to watch”.

They went on: “The idea of ‘DIANA: THE MUSICAL’ should’ve been destroyed, then burned, then have the earth where it grew salted.”

Not every critic hated the production about King Charles III’s first wife, however.

The Sunday Express’ theatre critic, Stefan Kyriazis, adored the musical which he described as “moving”.

Kyriazis gushed: “The musical numbers are slick and the script by Joe DiPietro rattles through every major Charles and Di moment from an awkward proposal (with the dreaded line ‘whatever love is’) to the inevitable collapse of the marriage, framed by the ever-lurking presence of Camilla.”

Tickets for Diana the Musical are out now.
