Dolly wrote in autobiography, Songteller: My Life in Lyrics: "I always wore my hair all teased up. Whenever that style started, I was the first to get my hair all poofy. Then as soon as I could buy those hairpieces and wigs, I wanted them."
Dolly has described wearing hair pieces as "handy" as opposed to showing off her own hair.
"Plus my hair would never do exactly what I wanted it to. So the wigs became kind of my trademark," Dolly shared.
Dolly's natural locks are fair, and she's shown them off in the past, in a black and white photo taken in 1965.
The star can be seen singing into a microphone with her gorgeous swept back locks on show.
Dolly, who has a staff who looks after her wigs, penned: "In case you're wondering, yes, that's my real hair."

As well as being a fan of her blonde and beautiful wigs, Dolly also has a penchant for tattoos.
And the Tennessee-born star is covered in them – one inking appears like a flower on the chest between her breast.
The star once told Q Magazine that she also has butterflies, ribbons, bows and a beehive tattooed.
Dolly said: "Butterflies don’t sting, they don’t bite, and they are so beautiful, and I just kind of related to them with my own personality. I claimed them as my little symbol.
"Most of my tattoos came because I’m very fair and I have a tendency to scar when I get any kind of cut.
"I’ve had surgeries for different things, and if the scars didn’t heal properly, I just gotta put tattoos to take the sting out."
Dolly turned 76 on January 19 and celebrated by recreating a stunning outfit from the 1970s.
"Just hangin’ out in my birthday suit!" she penned as she posed in a pink outfit, looking as glamorous as ever.
