UK weather is dropping in temperature once again.

As some parts of the country are set to face snow and ice this week, the freezing climate can be dangerous for drivers.

Now motorists are being warned of checking their cars to avoid a hefty fine and penalty points.

Drivers will be relying on their heating system to demist windows and make cabins more comfortable.

But if you're struggling to warm air from the vents, it might signal a bigger problem – low engine coolant.

If that's the case, you'll need to top-up as quickly as you can.

Daren Jasper, Head of Commercial Vehicles at Select Car Leasing, is advising drivers to check their coolant levels.

The coolant in the car doesn't just work to keep the engine from overheating but it's a source of warmth too.

If you're getting lukewarm or even cold air through the vents, then it's a sign your levels need to be checked.

A lack of warm air could also be a sign of a problem with the heater core itself.

You'll find the engine coolant reservoir underneath your car's bonnet, you can top up using a pre-mixed bottle of antifreeze or a mixture of water and antifreeze.

Alternatively, you can also use clean tap warning in an emergency.

It's always best to spot any issues early to make sure they don't lead to much more expensive problems later on.

The Highway Code states drivers should make sure they clear off all snow and ice from their windows before setting off, otherwise they risk a £1,000 fine and three penalty points on their licence.
