While the rest of the royal entourage paid homage to the Duke of Edinburgh yesterday, the 9th Earl Spencer kept his own father in his thoughts.
Charles Spencer, 57, who resides at the family seat, Althorp, in West Northamptonshire, marked 30 years since the death of his father John Spencer.
Sharing the milestone on Instagram, Princess Diana’s brother showed a picture of his father as a young man in uniform, accompanied by a picture which was taken at a later time in his life.
John Spencer died in 1992 aged 68 of a heart attack. Throughout his life, he occupied several distinguished roles, including equerry to King George VI and later Her Majesty the Queen.

Sharing the news on Instagram , Princess Diana’s brother showed a picture of his father as a young man in uniform, pictured, accompanied by a picture which was taken at a later time in his life.
‘Remembering my father, Johnnie Spencer, who died on this day 30 years ago. A photograph from his dashing youth, and a painting of him in his later years,’ Charles Spencer said.
The first picture , which was colourised by a friend of the Earl’s, showed a dashing John Spencer with his hair combed back, bearing a striking resemblance to his son.
In the second picture, a portrait painted towards the end of his life, the former County Councillor for Northamptonshire looked mature and content as he sat down in his library.

John Spencer led an incredible life and was equerry to both King George Vi and Her Majesty the Queen before he went on to become Justice of the Peace for Norfolk (pictured in January 1984)
As a young man in his 20s, he served a equerry to the King George VI, and then Queen Elizabeth from 1952 to 1954.
Aged just 35 he held the title of Sheriff of Northamptonshire, before becoming Justice of the Peace for Norfolk in 1970.
He eventually became a peer in the House of Lords in June 1975 and remained in pace until his death in 1992.
He married Charles and Diana’s mother Frances Ruth Roche in 1854, aged 30, and the pair went on to have five children, before they divorced in 1969, when Charles was five and Diana eight.
In 1978, Spencer had suffered a severe stroke, which considerably weakened him and kept him in hospital for eight months.
After contracting pneumonia shortly beforehand, he died of a heart attack in 1992 and was succeeded by Charles, who is now the 9th Earl Spencer and looks after his family’s legacy and domain.
