The former flame of Princess Beatrice’s husband, Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, has revealed three easy ways you can update your home without breaking the bank.

Dara Huang, an American architect who shares seven-year-old son Wolfie with property developer Edo, offered her top tips to make your home look chic without having to invest in new furniture.

It comes as the 40-year-old made her UK TV debut on Channel 4 show The Big Interiors Battle on the eve of King Charles’s coronation as members of the royal family – including Princess Beatrice – gear up to celebrate the historic occasion.

The architect is a judge on the show with host AJ Odudu as eight hopefuls battle it out to win a mortgage-free apartment in a search for the next big interior designer.

Her addition to the show follows an extensive career in architecture, which began with an undergraduate degree from the University of Florida, before transferring to Harvard for her Master’s in Architecture.

Dara Huang, an American architect, has recently shared three ways to update a ‘tired home’ hot on the heels of Channel 4 ‘s The Big Interiors Battle

Dara now runs Design Haus Liberty, and also founded Vivahouse, which converts disused commercial properties into co-living spaces.

This week the stunning star, who owns Design Haus Liberty, revealed to Ideal Home that revamping a worn-out house is a lot easier and cheaper than many would think.

So what three tips does the CEO have for updating your home?

1. Reorganise your shelves

The mother-of-one explained that a little decluttering goes a long way and revealed one common mistake that often leads to ‘messy’ shelves.

She advised people not to stack their books in a chaotic fashion, or have pieces of paper and other meaningless trinkets surrounding them.

She added: ‘What you want to do is this, it’s a bit theoretical, but you want to think about positive and negative space. This is especially important for your living room shelving ideas.’

What’s more, Dara shared a simple tip for adding an artsy flair to an otherwise dreary bookshelf. She encouraged people to stack their books both horizontally and vertically alongside other objects, while also making sure to keep similar items like picture frames and bowls stacked together in uniformity.

2. Change your light bulbs

It’s hard to spot the decorative appeal of changing a lightbulb, but Dara insists this DIY trick can instantly update your home.

She said: ‘Another quick fix is changing your light bulbs, just making sure they’re all warm white instead of cold and that they’re all matching.’

And no need to stop there, why not experiment with a variety of light colours, bulb shapes or even energy-saving bulbs like LED lights?

3. Add a centrepiece to your coffee table

Your living room coffee table unquestionably serves the purpose of kicking back, putting your feet up and sharing a drink or two with family and friends. But it’s just as crucial to your living room aesthetic.

However Dara is quick to point out that laziness often gets the best of us, and instead of beautifying the room’s centrepiece, we instead leave it bare, often piling it with mundane items like mugs and old magazines.

She suggested quick fixes like stacking reading books, adding crafty vases and even faux branches atop the table for an instant makeover.

These tips ensure your living room transforms from drab to fab without breaking the bank.
